Test your Brain

This is really interesting. It's kind of a brain teaser.

Condition : You must do this in your head. Don't use paper to write out the problem.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000.
Now add 30. And another 1000.
Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now add 10.

What is the total?

Spoiler
Did you get 5000? Most people do, but the correct answer is actually 4100. If you don't believe me, try using a calculator or writing it on paper.
Thanks.

i don't think you're going to like it very much here

my advice is to leave now, while you still can, and never return

denialdesosa, don't take these replies as typical of people in CC. And especially, don't take them personally.

There are about a dozen or so people who post regularly in this forum who do nothing more than troll (I have learned that this means to deliberately provoke some type of response, without having the slightest interest whatsoever in the conversation)

The worst offenders often times refuse to support the website by purchasing premium accounts (very inexpensive btw) and don't seem to join very many CC games. I am not sure why anyone would want to behave this way. Too much time on their hands, I think.

You can find people here who share your interests! Be patient.

Just ignore the monsters under the bridge! :) (they are, after all, quite toothless)

Okay, so I got 5000 in my head and checked, and it was 4100.

So, what's the reason? Is there a reason? It has to be some brain function thing, right?

I did come up with 4100, but I was being very careful about it... can you pinpoint where you deviated from the correct answer?

edit: I think it must be at the very end, where carrying the one slips to the wrong column.

No... I think it's because I went in order (rather than adding the 1000s first and then the 40, 30, 20, 10, etc.)

I did it twice and got 5k
Then I just counted the 1000's separate from the minor numbers and got 4100
nuts
I think it's at the end too.

I just added them and got 4100... (using the same order too). I just said 10-40, 20-40, 20-70, 30-70, 30-90, 40-90, then that 10 added brings us to 4100...

How did y'all get 5000?

I got 4100 doing it in the order it was written in, but I was being very careful.

Its at the end when you add 10 to 4090. Your head is trying to add 490 and 10, and coming up with 500. It is a case of carrying over to the wrong column.

That must be it. Admittedly, I was not careful the first time around and just went in order.

The psychology of the trap is pretty interesting. You're dealing with the 10's column and the 1000's column, skipping over the 100's, so unless you're careful you'll forget about the 100's when it's time to carry. I got 5000 the first time, then before looking at the answer said, "wait, this sounds like some kind of trick question." so the second time I was more careful and got 4,100. I think I was muttering it half out loud, and that helped.

Nice one, deni.

i wonder if the people who got it wrong are all right handed, seriously, i am right handed and came up with 5000, 3 times.
my wife is left handed and she got it correct the 1st time.

my post was a genuine and friendly warning to a kid who seemed like a nice, earnest person, who is probably not going to enjoy the daily 100-page slapfights always happening here

That's an interesting thought. I'm right-handed, and I came up with 5000 probably six times. Then I read through the thread and VERY PAINSTAKINGLY did the problem again and (I think, barely) managed to get 4100. And I LOVE math and math problems...sheesh.

I don't think handedness has anything to do with it... unless I'm a secret southpaw... :?

No: I got it right, and I'm right-handed. I couldn't see what was interesting about the problem until a bunch of people said they got the (same) wrong answer.

I'm just less intelligent than the other posters in this thread. That is a logical explanation.

[checks who's posted so far]
No, there must be another explanation...

I'm better than usual at maths right now cos I've been helping the kids with theirs. The curlson struggles with maths sometimes, and the curlette is a year ahead of her grade on hers and thus sometimes also takes a while to get it - hence daddy is drafted in to help, and various rusty algebra-calculating cogs etc get a little lubrication after [ahem] years.
