From the news source godless Brits love to hate: Newsmax.com:
Pope in the UK: Atheists Like NazisIn the midst of loud protests and thinner crowds than those that turned out for John Paul II's visit to the United Kingdom in 1982, Pope Benedict compared modern U.K. atheism with the rise of Nazi Germany — warning against "aggressive secularism," according to a report in the U.K.'s Mirror.
In his opening address to the Queen at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, the Pope spoke of "a Nazi tyranny that wished to eradicate God from society," according to a BBC report.
"Even in our own lifetimes, we can recall how Britain and her leaders stood against a Nazi tyranny that wished to eradicate God from society and denied our common humanity to many, especially the Jews, who were thought unfit to live," he said.
"As we reflect on the sobering lessons of atheist extremism of the 20th century, let us never forget how the exclusion of God, religion and virtue from public life leads ultimately to a truncated vision of man and of society and thus a reductive vision of a person and his destiny," the Pontiff added.

When a former Nazi is saying you're acting like Nazis, Godwin's law doesn't apply, right?

Seems like just bad sportsmanship to me. Maybe just a little angry the church has lost their tyrannical stranglehold on the population. Gets a 3.0 rating from me. Sore loser.

Oh shit, a typeo. Clearly I don't know how to spell atheist. You can tell, because every other time I've typed the word on these forums it is spelled wrong.

Me too! I, for one, have never heard the "nazis were atheists and nazis were bad therefore atheist are bad" argument. It's quite groundbreaking.

He probably speaks 16 languages, I think English will convey the necessary sentiment.

You miss what I mean, looking back at that post I can see why it didn't come through at all.
This current pope hardly deserves the name, he has totally undone so many advances that Pope John Paul II worked hard for. Not to mention he would rather throw up rhetoric rather then actually deal with the issues pressing the catholic church.
My $.02

Hmm. A powerful German Catholic blaming a religious minority for committing atrocities that they had nothing to do with.

With the exception of Blink's last post I only see personal attacks against the Pope and no discussion about whether the Pope's POV was correct or whether or not the news site was being fair. I think ya'll should be more respectful of OP's and not go on your individual witch hunts. I'm not saying we don't all stray from time to time but f*ck man. Create a dialogue instead of being political hacks.
Not to be hypocritical I'll discuss the OP. I do think the article is extreme. The writer accuses the Pope of libel for merely stating his belief that turning away from God leads to destruction. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the message of essentially every major religion? So for the writer to make that attack is disrespectful to those in his audience who are Catholic. One should not have to have their leader verbally assaulted in such a scurrilous manner when it regards the fundamental make-up of the church. The editor may as well of entitled the article 'Catholicism is complete BS' if he's going to allow for claims like that in his/her publication.

If somebody says that I am akin to a Nazi I will call them an asshole. The Pope said atheists are akin to Nazis. Therefore, I am calling the Pope an asshole.

Being godless means you can't get your morals from society.
In fact, you have no morals.
Therefore, you are an evil person.

Forget religion for a moment and ask yourself a question ;
Should we take lessons in morality from a person who sees fit to protect child abusers ?

Good job on completely taking him out of context. He talked about "a Nazi tyranny that wished to eradicate God from society" and that "denied our common humanity to many, especially the Jews." And he called it "atheism extremism" and not merely "atheism."
So unless you are all three of:
a. atheist
b. wish to eradicate religious rights
c. want to deny rights/humanity to an ethnic group;
then he was not referring to you.
Reading and comprehension is our friend.

I agree with the sentiment, but then, innate fallibility of any human leader is a big reason I am Protestant and not Roman Catholic.

Well, this particular originator has created several threads on this and related themes. So, there is more context here.
Anyway, while I have little respect for this current leader of the Roman Catholic church, this is a topic that John Paul and many other leaders have and do address. The secularization of society, elimination of Christianity, and faith in general, is a threat to religions. those of us who value the input of religion into society often do see it as a potential "threat". The distinction is in the wording and implied actions.
Most sane people see this as a matter of discussion and for positive action on the part of churches.. as in, if the churches were doing what they should, then atheism would not have a huge sway. This along with basic assurances of general religious freedom.
That said, the interesting part is that unlike US education, religion is very much a part of regular education in the UK. Students have prayers and partake in religion classes.
