Conquer Club

I'm a bit starved for some conversation on early music and I still have a couple weeks before I go back to school. Not sure how much I'll get here, but I figured I'd give it a try.



So here's a piece by Gregorio Allegri, 1582-1652.

It's a fairly simple piece, particularly since it was written in the early Baroque yet is more indicative of the late Renaissance. It Utilizes two choirs. One of 4 members singing Fauxbordon, with the other having 5 members and a slightly more elaborate material. It also as intermittent Plainsong.

That being said, I've always loved this piece, it's just so beautiful. However I heard I story recently that just makes me appreciate it even more.



Back when this piece was written, composers where hired by churches, courts, or patrons. It wasn't till beethoven that composers were just composers. So when you wrote a piece for the church, court, or your patron, they owned the rights to it. After this piece was written, it was owned not by any little local church, but the Vatican. The Vatican recognizing the beauty and "mystery" of the piece, wanted to keep it under lock and key, only allowing it out for rehearsals and performances. No one could study it, no one could copy. Anyone who did try to copy it, did so under the threat of excommunication.

What the Vatican wasn't expecting though, was a visit from a young 14 year old Mozart along with his Father in 1770. After hearing the piece but twice, he transcribed it from memory and thus was the first unauthorized copy.

That was fairly good...I'm not much of a choir fan though. But I did enjoy it. I usually go for more orchestral music when I listen to classical. My favorite style would probably be Romantic (Franz Liszt, Chopin, and especially Dvorak for example), although I really like The Five as well, especially Mussorgsky.

La Campanella--Liszt as performed by Alice Sara Ott. The ending of this one is delivered particularly well, much emotion.

A Teardrop--Modest Mussorgsky

Of course everyone's heard this one, but it's still pretty awesome: Night on Bald Mountain. I remember as a kid I thought this song was terrifying. It's so dark. I love it.

Also you mentioned "Night on Bald Mountain", but for my money I'd have to go with Rachmaninoff's "Ilse of the Dead".

It's in 5/8 (maybe 5/4) and you really get a sense of the painting it was written after.

I didn't want to say classical, because technically that refers to the period of music from 1750-1827.

Do you still play? I tried the piano, but I could never learn it well because we couldn't afford a functioning one. My mom had one, but half the strings were broken and a few keys were missing, and the estimate to get it fixed was ridiculously expensive. It was an old one with actual ivory keys if I remember correctly.

I took lessons from age 8 to age 16. Then I quit because I wanted to play football (a synonym for "being cool.") One of the worst mistakes of my life.

I stumbled across a number of works by Erik Satie sometime ago, and I've been listening to them off and on with my ipod. One of his most famous pieces you may all may be familiar with:

Gymnopedies – La 1 Ere. Lent et Douloureux.

That thought came to mind when I first popped into this thread.

As a kid --sick in bed with the mumps-- an Aunt of mine gave me The Peer Gynt Suite
by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and the movement "In the Hall of the Mountain King"
absolutely blew me away. If you're taking notes this music comes from the Romantic Era.

The Incidental Music to Peer Gynt, Op.23 was originally written in 1875 and it premiered
in 1876 with the Henrik Ibsen play "Peer Gynt." Twelve years later Grieg extracted eight passages to create two, four movement suites, "Suite No.1, Op. 46" and "Suite No.2, Op.55".

For many years the suites were the only parts of this music available, then a year after his death in 1907 the original score of twenty six movements was published.

My favorite piece: Bach's Brandenburg Concerto #5. The harpsichord solo near the end is a trip, especially the last minute and a half (from about 7:00 to 8:30 on this video). Way ahead of its time. It sounds like something a really good rock guitarist would do when the rest of the band stops to cut him loose for a bit.

Grieg and Mussorgsky are pro. I've got a soft spot for Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique."

Yeah that's a great solo. Also I believe I remember my old composition teacher telling me that Metal has it's roots in the baroque.

So this is James Howard Young. He Graduated from Peabody with a master in Historical Performance his instrument being Baroque Recorder.


This is him playing a movement from Brandenburg Concerto no.4 on Melodicas. It's really good and really funny.
