Funny or Wrong?

I recall this incident from a decade ago, but it recently resurfaced in my feed.

Accident from July 6, 2013
Fake pilot names were called into a local TV News program. Apparently these names were verbally “confirmed” as correct by an intern at the NTSB, and so the news reported them on live TV. It’s unclear (to me) if the intern just said yes without thinking or knew it was a joke and said “f*ck it”. It’s unclear (to me) if anyone in the TV News seriously questioned the validity of the names. I don’t know if anyone got caught or what the fallout was… I’ve not done research. It’s amazing to me that these made it on air… this was 2013, not 1970! What do you all think?

It was insensitive and racist and was not funny. But just because something is insensitive and racist doesn't mean it isn't funny.
I thought the following was funny (possibly because you can switch the target to any identifiable group or individual, I guess) -
Q: Why do(es) [insert target group or individual] smell?
A: So that blind people can hate them too.

I guess it's insensitive but it's funny so get over it. I can't see how it's racist. Seems like everything is racist nowadays.

I got a good chuckle. Made funnier that a news outlet didn't look at the names and go "gee, maybe this is a prank?"

Yeah… but once you tell the joke and insert the “identifiable group” it becomes “racist” or insensitive. No?
BTW…. the joke is an old one and it isn’t “insert target group” it’s “Italians”.
Why do you hate Italians?
