i've had an opponent who started with +12 in AoM i managed to beat him.
and i've also had a game where my opponent started with SA and australia on classic map. both were protected by neutrals. i lost miserably.

In a conversation involving the best starting positions ever, starting with an entire continent would seem to be a pre-requisite. In a 6 player game starting with a continent is rare but it has happened many many times since we've played hundreds of thousands of games. For 2 or 3 player games starting with a continent happens pretty frequently.
But considering the original player got a bonus of 14 men for continents, the bonus of 2 your opponent gained would not be rare or exceptional in comparison.

I started in a 5 player game with all of europe. needless to say no one let me keep the bonus for more than 1 round lol. Europe is hard to close the entries in.

Well you all had opponents like that, but once i had europe + australia in begining, i mean not all australia and europe but in both 1 nation was missing, but in 1v1 i think the most important is drop and after that most important who plays first, so dont play 1v1, it sux

I think I started with europe in a 5 player classic game once. Not sure though.
