from the Sept 11 thread:

pimpdave wrote:LOCK THIS FUCKING THREAD.
pimpdave wrote:LOCK THIS FUCKING THREAD.
so apparently a temper tantrum mixed with internet tough guy syndrome are all it takes to get a thread locked? Why not just not read the thread instead of kicking and screaming about what other people are saying? dave, I was actually trying to help.
i would also like to suggest to the moderators that conversations have a tenancy to wander. if a topic shifts during the process of a conversation, why does it have to be locked?

that thread was made for the sole purpose of being spam, and trolling..

i think that thread was made as satire. most people seem to have missed that though.
EDIT: it seems that too many threads designed to provoke discussion just get put down as being trolls by the majority, mainly by people who can't develop more of a response than '

i don't like this topic'

perhaps, but it turned into a pretty serious discussion. Why is that wrong?

oh nah i wasn't saying there was anything wrong with that, it makes good reading. made me consider what i say about 9/11 more carefully as well, that's for sure.

I would suggest that the original goal of that thread was certainly not spam or trolling, but an take from our over the pond allies on the American-centered drama that is surrounding remembrance of 9/11, especially given the IRA bombings and direct terrorist attacks that Europeans have dealt with over the last 40 years (from the Battle of Britain onward). This was a valid point, and other tools were available than just locking the thread (i.e. warning trolling posters, deleting spamming posts, etc.). Once again the moderators overreact and throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I think when you are made a CC mod, you are given a lock button. But in order to get the lock button, you have to stick a tube in your ear, and have Lack suck your brains out.

Of course it's an American-centered drama!

What, do we no longer have the right to have memorials about terrorist attacks now? I'm sorry if some Europeans feel so absorbed by American culture that they feel like an American national holiday (day of mourning?) is thrust upon them, but that's not
our fault. It's theirs and their compatriots'.

i think it was the over the top flag waving the thread was aimed at, not the fact that the mourning is american centred.

I actually thought that it was a good thread. im sorry that pimpdave was so offended by it that he lost his cool. i am an american too and i think that it was insensitive, but not worthy of tantrums and itg threats.

Not making judgement about the locking of the thread .. but i think someone should state that the practice of Tolling, as Pimp did (
LOCK THIS FUCKING THREAD
for whatever reason) will not single-handed get threads locked.
what i mean is: "the ruling to lock the thread was made because of the nature of the thread itself, not because of what Pimp turned it into on his own"?
Otherwise it sets a bad precedent as there was actually some good and reasoned debate in there.
The timing of the lock may have just been bad but at this moment it looks like Pimps actions caused the threads demise.

nope, nothing to do with pimp. I was debating on locking it the other day when it was made, but I chose not to, and let it be to see where it went. If you all are in favour of it being reopened I suggest saying so. and as long as it stays on topic I will reconsider unlocking it.

Apart from Pimpdave's tantrum, the thread was like most other threads. The thing that saved the thread was it being not on topic actually.

All of you who protest so vociferously on topics you care about call it a tantrum.
Brilliant hypocrisy. Protest or tantrum. Tantrum or protest. *sigh*

ours are articulate and reasoned posts. 'LOCK THIS FUCKING THREAD' isn't.

That you protested is not the issue, it was the format (i.e. the wording) of the protest and the reactionary result by Clapper to that protest (your posts should have been deleted and you warned by the powers that claim to be).
Also as to your "protest", holding your hands over your ears and yelling "I'M NOT LISTENING" is something that a 6 year old would do, i.e. a tantrum, not a protest. No hypocrisy here, just you being childish.
