Why does everyone find it impossible to keep away from the creatin/evolution debate which has gotten nowhere in an entire century? Humans came to be too long ago for it to make any significant difference.

Because the internet is a place to share ideas and viewpoints.
It's the same reason people go to college. It is to expand their mind. College campuses, internet forums, and old town squares are all Marketplaces of Ideas. While no one's viewpoint may ever be changed, it is a place that open-minded people still may gain something, even if it is just a better understanding of another person.
I doubt any of the people in these debates truly believe they will change anybody's mind, but it is interesting to see what facts or opinions those people have.

because people are so desperate to be right that they will happily grind pointlessly away at each other day after day after day rather than just accept that someone has a different point of view to them.

Because its not really about Evolution, its about whether science and truth have any meaning or if we are, instead supposed to just listen to what a few people think.
There is now an entire generation of young people who have NOT BEEN TAUGHT what evolution really is. They have been taught things like fossils were all mixed up in Noah's flood. Taht Noah's flood did away with the Dinosaurs (though THAT is not even consistant with the Bible!), that there is no such thing as Geologic Stratification, that most rocks on Earth were formed by sedimentary deposits from Noah's flood.
The ONLY way someone can believe all these things is if they are kept completely and utterly ignorant of REAL science. And THAT is pretty scary!
Think it a small matter? Think about Sarah Palin's real views .. not her stump speeches, which are highly watered down to appease moderates. Think about the impact these views would have on decisions she wil make .. or George Bush HAS made because of these narrow views.
Granted, the US is not the world, but I find it pretty scary that sucha large nation is being ruled by someone who will not even bother to verify if what they are taught is real and true.

How about because people like to interact, on the web, in real life and on any other medium invented (or not) by man.
Equally people like to know and to share. I have my beliefs, others here have theirs, and people like to share their thoughts on a subject, especially when there are so many people on both sides of the fence. Some want to know the answer and seek knowledge, some just enjoy the debate, and some dont give a crap they just like stirring shit up.

Invade?
It is the US we are talking about ... the rest of the world does not listen to the Evangelical Christians, for the most part.... at least on this subject.
And as for "who cares"
When roughly 30% of Bush appointees think this way and make decisions based upon what is NOT science and have not the knowledge to know it IS NOT science .. when they are the ones Recomending and puttin forward science proposals... when MY SON is told that he is "a bit strange" because he is being taught Evolution, not that the Earth was created in 7 revolutions of our planet... It DOES matter.
People can think as they like, but when they move from merely thinking to insisting that everyone else has to agree, or at least be taught these ideas AS IF THEY WERE REAL, AS IF THEY HAD ANY BACKING in any way similar to REAL SCIENCE.. it is scary.
Think I am overstating the case? Just look at the CC threads on the subject or visit the websites for Creationists ... Institute for Creation Studies is one, but there are others. These are largely the supposedly educated folks the next generation ...
