Black, White and Brilliant

Favourite black and white movies:

Sunset Boulevard - classic film-noire giving a behind the scenes look at at the real Hollywood - atmospheric camera work and a brilliant script. The opening speech sets the scene beautifully:
Yes, this is Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. It's about five o'clock in the morning. That's the Homicide Squad - complete with detectives and newspapermen. A murder has been reported from one of those great big houses in the ten thousand block. You'll read about it in the late editions, I'm sure. You'll get it over your radio and see it on television because an old-time star is involved - one of the biggest. But before you hear it all distorted and blown out of proportion, before those Hollywood columnists get their hands on it, maybe you'd like to hear the facts, the whole truth. If so, you've come to the right party. You see, the body of a young man was found floating in the pool of her mansion - with two shots in his back and one in his stomach. Nobody important, really. Just a movie writer with a couple of 'B' pictures to his credit. The poor dope! He always wanted a pool. Well, in the end, he got himself a pool - only the price turned out to be a little high.

Also: Laura, It's a Wonderful Life, Now Voyager and of course Psycho - they don't make 'em like they used to.
What are your favourite oldies?

The ending, too.... 'mr de mille, i'm ready for my close up...'
*shivers* what a film...

The Maltese Falcon - because bogey is just too cool.
Lolita - the Kubrick version. Hilarious.

They don't, do they, although Rumblefish and Pi are two more recent b&w zingers.

That's 'just 'orrible!

Another great, but modern B&W one is Schindler's List. Though rather depressing, a true masterpiece of cinematography.

Any one seen Now, Voyager? A lovely little melodrama where an ugly duckling (Bette Davis) turns swan and meets the man of her dreams. Highlight of the film is when the charismatic Paul Hendried lights two cigarettes and passes one to his lady. *sigh*
don't let's ask for the moon, we have the stars..

No mention of Metropolis thus far?

Two more in my top ten and one in my top twenty (Metropolis hasn't made the top 20, yet, though I'll be re-watching it soon and it might. Seeing as Brazil is my #1 it wouldn't surprise me if it did ;):
The Elephant Man (#4)
Persona (#6)
Dr. Strangelove (somewhere in 10-20, haven't figured those out yet)

And, of freaking course:
Repulsion

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid.

Technology was pretty good for its time. Steve Martin in Film Noire (sort of). If you haven't seen it, and like Steve Martin, it is a must see.

Sorry. Lack of sleep tends to make you overlook simple spelling errors. And as I type this, I had to redo several words.
