Silent = Negative Attitude?

Why is is that people feel forced to rate others attitude down because they're silent?
Last I checked, AIM and MSN and facebook were for socializing, and this game was for playing...

Why do people rate 1 stars in all categories including fair play for a 2 player rt sequential? Why do some people give 1 star ratings to everyone they play? Why do some people give you 5 stars across the board, but leave tags such as "rude"?
The answer is the same for all those questions including yours.

I would think that applies to everyone, not just people on CC...
But yes, that is basically what I am getting at.

Call me old-fashioned if you like, when a game starts I wish people a fun time and if my opponent(s) do not have the courtesy to react to that I rate them lower in attitude than somebody who does react. Some applies for a parting remark at the end of the game.
This may not be facebook, but there's nothing wrong with politeness and etiquette IMHO. We're still people, not robots.

I would agree here, but i usually give all 5 stars unless they are rude in the chat. Then if they are positive in the chat i will take it one step ferther and check the friendly box.

I would not say that I specifically rate folks
down for being silent, but how can I commment on what I don't see? When the criteria is "exceptional" ...I cannot say if someone is silent because they are mad about losing or some other reason.
I will usually start with a 4 and mark silent. Then if I play again, particularly if the other person loses (and shows no tantrums, etc.) I will give a 5 and mark "silent" in case other people notice tantrums.
Only if someone is completely postive, (and particularly positive in the face of a major loss/bad drop, etc) will I give a 5 for attitude right off. I am not rating "down", just unable to rate what I don't see.

Which is a really poor attitude to take, do you really care so little that people might be trying to communicate with you? Not looking at the chat-box is equivalent to sitting round a game-table with cotton wool stuffed in your ears. If I played you and found out you did that then I'd rate your attitude 1.

The people you are playing may not even speak English. To punish them for not speaking sounds like something a liberal Democrat would do without checking the implications of their actions.
And before you post a reactionary comment to this, ask yourself, who did you vote for? Obama? Then you have just proven me right.

Exactly! You can't comment; it's called "not ranking" them in that area.

How can you consider saying "Gl" to each other and "gg" to each other communication? And most people, when they talk, never actually talk; they complain about dice or how lucky the other person is. I've only seen a few things, ever, in my 3k of games that actually required or even deserved a response, and I gave one. But since I have about 60 games active at any one time, I don't see the point in typing good luck and good game over and over, to people that don't even care.

Uhh, no. It sounds like something any asshole that feels like bring people down would do. Keep your politics in your own thread. I voted Obama, and have never rated anyone down, unless given a reason to do so (ie, suiciding, throwing the game, or verbally attacking for no reason).

i always thought it was silent=deadly... anyway, my favorite is when i play with my partner, and we wish
everyone luck, then end up having a conversation between ourselves, without anyone from the other team ever
saying anything... then we receive poor ratings and are called silent... classic. anyway, as someone stated above,
some people you play on here aren't english speakers, so why assume everyone speaks your language? and as i have
done in many games, alot of people don't even ever check the game chat... i don't think being silent is negative, however
i am a sound believer in the silent=deadly corollary...-0

Rating someone down for a poor attitude when they don't display any attitude does seem a little harsh. Remember, we have the option of not leaving a rating for a particular category at all. If I play someone who doesn't say anything in chat, I tend to just leave Fair Play and Gameplay ratings while leaving Attitude blank.

what if they don't speak english? please explain to me how it is poor attitude if someone from thailand or spain or germany doesn't respond to your english typing? do you ever go to the other language forums and attempt to post in threads that you don't understand the language? do it sometime, it is a real blast!-0
p.s.-what if lack went the way a lot of his countrymen felt, and made this site a "french only" speaking site... would you be able to respond to our canadian brothers that only spoke french in game chat? i doubt it.

Once again, define "chat". I don't consider "gl" something worth responding to. If someone says "Hey, gl, and how are you this (evening/morning/night), then I respond, but just saying "gl" and "gg" at the end doesn't seem worth anyones time.

But you said most of the time you don't even read the chat, which is the situation where I would rate someone poorly. If someone says something and you don't respond to it you are displaying a poor attitude. If no one says anything than all players are displaying an indifferent attitude and I wouldn't mark anything for anyone.

Too many people see that as a bad rating.
But really, if someone goes through a game without a bunch of complaints ... I consider that a good attitude. If they are actually positive, I consider that excellent.
If they go through several games, losing and all, and
either stay positive OR don't comment... I consider that "excellent".
I really think we need new tags, etc .. but that is a whole other topic!

I no longer rate people, but I will add a few comments.
In a two player game, I could care less whether the person talks, since there is usually nothing to talk about. A polite conversation can be nice, and makes the game more fun, but 98% of the time, the conversation is meaningless.
A multi-player game is a whole other story, if the game is going fairly closely, I love it when people come in and chat. It makes the game a lot more interesting, and allows meaningful diplomacy.

See! This kind of high-handed elitist response is just proof of the poor attitude that your silence surrounds. Who are you to declare that your opponents do not "deserve" your response? Who are you to decree that their attempts at communication are somehow not worthy of being called 'talk'? Who made you the high arbiter of the worth of their attempts at dialogue? A 1 for attitude is the absolute maximum that snobbish players like yourself deserve.
owenshooter wrote:what if they don't speak english?
Then it displays poor manners on their part. I mean, would you go to a German site and attempt to play there, knowing that you were unable to communicate with others on the site? People's laziness in learning the language is as much a poor attitude as people who know it but refuse to use it. Both categories deserve attitude ratings of 1.

im austrian too (we speak german here)
i have only been learning english at school for a couple of years so i know how easy it is to learn
anyway, they could say that the dont speak english (in their language) but to say nothing is bad attitude
if someone on the street spoke to you in a different language would you just ignore them or would you try to explain you dont speak their language?

I come here to play risk. "meeting"/talking to people from all over the world is a nice bonus, but you don't have to talk to play well.

So not saying anything is only not negative when no one else does either? So, it's not indifference if someone says something that I don't really care about and don't feel like responding to?

Uhh, are you stupid? I didn't say the player was unworthy of conversation, just that "gl" is not a conversation, and doesn't really deserve a response. Conversation is a discussion, and "gl" is not even a full word, it's an abbreviation. To put it in simpler terms, if you're in high school (sad times, glad they're done), and someone in the hallway passes and says "sup?", do you reply with a whole paragraph at them, or do you reply with "sup"? My answer would be, neither, I ignore them, because they haven't given me the time of day at that place and time, and if they wish to converse, they'll either stop and greet me, or see me later.
Skittles! wrote:owenshooter wrote:what if they don't speak english?

Now I know you're stupid. So you're saying, they should either speak english or not play? And those forums created for other languages, we should just destroy those and tell them to make their own site. While we're at it, lets kick everyone who doesn't speak english out of America. Sounds like a plan.
Jeff Hardy wrote:if someone on the street spoke to you in a different language would you just ignore them or would you try to explain you dont speak their language?
I would point in a random direction and move on. They can find someone else of their own native tongue to converse with. Besides, it is easy to learn english, but on the same token, no language is overly complicated. I was able to learn German within 3 months, and am pretty damn fluent in it.
frankiebee wrote:Haha, and than thinking the rating system was introduced because it would be more simple
