The battle resulted in the almost complete destruction of the Russian Second Army, and the suicide of its commanding general, Alexander Samsonov. 0/4 Rounds - Tsingtao was a colony located in China that was actually leased to Germany for 99 years due to the murder of 2 German missionaries. Germany built a port and naval base here, and when General Mitsuomi Kamio was ordered to prepare early for a battle on their home soil at Tsingtao, the Germans were taken by surprise. Soon after Japan declared war, they sent in 23,000 troops along with 1500 troops from Britain. The Germans were able to hold their ground for 2 months, but finally surrendered on November 7th, 1914.

0/4 Rounds - After victory at Cer, the Serbs had initiative and were pressured by the major Allies to attack Austria quickly. Austro-Hungarian commander Potiorek was emotionally invested in avenging the death of Franz Ferdinand, and also needed to prevent further Serbian incursions. After some wide-open combat in the early days, the campaign ground down into trench warfare. This was not a clear Serbian victory like Cer, but the Empire was demoralized by its failure to decisively put the Serbs down.

0/6 Rounds - The First Battle of the Masurian Lakes was a German offensive in the Eastern Front during the early stages of World War I. After the destruction of the Russian Second Army at Tannenberg, the Germans moved to exploit their advantage, mauling the First Russian Army and ejecting it from Germany. Further progress was hampered by the arrival of the Russian Tenth Army on the Germans' left flank. Despite more than two-fold numerical superiority and heavily fortified defensive position, Russians suffered a crushing defeat and retreated in disarray with huge losses, leaving 150 guns.

0/5 Rounds - This battle is a classic. It was the pawn-queen4 of naval warfare during the first World War. Our tournament will focus on the most classic settings on Conquer Club. In context - The Royal Navy had for years been the most powerful on the sea, protecting the merchant ships which formed the "veins" of the British Empire. The Germans had expanded their navy (as had all the main powers). They felt confident enough to patrol the North Sea, particularly around the archipelago known as Heligoland. The British ambushed the Germans there, resulting in nearly complete British victory. The Germans responded with pawn-King's bishop4: To utilize their navy extremely carefully from now on, and not stray far from the minefields and coastal fortifications.

0/4 Rounds - Battle off Texel, October 17th, 1914 Texel is one of the Frisian Islands in Holland. 4 German torpedo boats were en route to lay mines when a much superior British force came across them. The battle was extremely one-sided. All the German boats were sunk and all the crew killed or taken prisoner. This isn't the first time a battle was fought in the waters around Texel. The first time was a much more interesting affair (actually the second of 4 naval battles in those waters). In 1673, the Dutch and French were at war. The British fought alongside the French. In total, 167 warships fought, although not a single one was lost. Since the British were not able to obtain naval superiority, they were not able to land their marines.

0/10 Rounds - (The Battle of the Silver Helmets, also known as the Battle of Haelen) The last battle engaged in purely by cavalry troops. The Belgian Guards (who fought unhorsed) defeated the German 4th cavalry (who fought horsed) and finally brought home to Europe the lessons that cavalry charges could not be maintained against repeating rifles and other weapons. The name "Silver Helmets" came from the pickelhaube (German spiked helmets) left on the field. Despite being a small action, it has gone down in Belgian folklore as a great victory, its reputation probably greater than its true importance.

The Cunard Line's Carmania became one of the first of these cruisers. The German ship Cap Trafalgar was also turned into an armed merchant cruiser, but disguised to look like... the Carmania! The two met off the coast of Brazil, and Cap Trafalgar became the first armed cruiser sunk by another armed cruiser.

0/4 Rounds - During the Great Retreat to the Marne, the Allies fought various holding actions. In each, they were blasted out of their positions by German heavy artillery. What you need to appreciate this phase of the Great War is to feel either the rush of power when you bombard your opponent out of existence, or that horrible feeling when he does it to you. What this tournament is about is bombardment, and to that end I have rounded up all the CC maps that feature bombardment.

In this tourney, we will use both 1v1 and Terminator games to represent the slaughter of civilians. Freemiums are welcome, but must reserve a game slot and keep it reserved throughout the tournament.

Maybe a vigorous offensive could have smashed the German armies and led to a quick end to the war. We cannot be certain what would have been. As it happened, the Allied advance was slow and methodical, and the Germans were able to entrench themselves firmly at the Aisne.

As Christmas approached and the war showed no sign of reaching an end or even slowing down, troops on both sides began re-assessing their prospects. Stuck in cold, muddy trenches, assaulted by the stench of unburied dead, tired and homesick, soldiers were hungry for a bit of civilization amidst the brutal reality of war..

The Turkish government would not join the war, but Souchon was charismatic and attracted a cult following with the Turkish officers. Souchon's fleet began a training exercise which was in reality a sneak attack. The Ottomans raided Russian ports, trying to capture ships unsuspecting. 0/5 Rounds - Take a rear admiral with a bunch of converted merchant ships and some outdated and under-gunned cruisers. Have him attack an enemy with 5 new ships 8.2 inch guns, and 2 crews with gunnery skill accolades. Have the British be shocked about the loss - you have yourself a Coronel. This is the first British naval loss in a full-out battle since the Battle of Lake Champlain in October of 1814, more than 100 years earlier. The British were shocked about the loss because no living Brit could remember what such a loss felt like.

0/4 Rounds - The Bergmann Offensive was the first engagement of the Caucasus Campaign during World War I. General Georgy Bergmann, commander of I Caucasian Army Corps, took the initiative against the Ottoman Empire. On November 2nd, Bergmann's troops crossed the border in the general direction of Koprükoy. On the right flank, a brigade under Istomin moved from Oltu in the direction of Id. On the left flank a Cossack division under Baratov moved into the Eleskirt valley towards Yuzveran, after it crossed the Aras River. In response the Ottoman 3rd Army went on a general counter-offensive. As a result Russian forces were threatened by an enveloping movement on both sides. Only quick arrival of Russian reinforcements saved the situation. The fighting finally petered out on November 16th.

0/1 Rounds - After the calamity of Galicia-Lemberg, the Austrian army was in full retreat. The fortress city of Przemysl, guarding key transportation routes -- the railway line between Lvov and Krakow, and river crossings across the San River -- was left behind Russian lines. The city's existing fortifications were heavily reinforced, and the town managed to survive a six-week siege by the Russians. The Siege was a brief but very intense phase of operations on the Eastern front. This is a one-round tournament. You will get seventeen 12-player games all at once.

0/4 Rounds - By the time World War I broke out, the world's major navies were switching from coal to oil. Airplanes were rapidly becoming an important military arm. Most transport was still horse-drawn, but motor-powered transport was evolving rapidly and would pass horse-drawn transport in importance before the war ended. Furthermore, a new process was being used which extracted toluol (an explosives component) from petroleum. The Great War was therefore the first oil war, and the capture of Basra by the British in 1914 was the opening round in the Persian Gulf oil wars which are still being fought today.

0/3 Rounds - The First Battle of Champagne, which after minor skirmishes starting ten days earlier, began on 20 December 1914. This was effectively the first significant attack by the Allies against the Germans since the construction of trenches following the so-called 'race to the sea' during the autumn of 1914. Joffre, the French Commander-in-Chief, was determined to win the war quickly, and despite a lack of success in more local attacks against trench lines, resolved to launch a major offensive against the Germans. Despite being outnumbered, the Germans were entrenched, and successfully demonstrated their superiority in defensive warfare via the machine gun. Fighting continued without break until mid-February, where there was a brief lull in the battle to re-organize. After a short break the fighting resumed until 17 March when the entire offensive was called off by the French mostly because of the strength of German counter-attacks (particularly along the La Basse Canal and near Soissons from 8 January-5 February) combined with a costly lack of success.

After leaving Tsingtao, the Emden had a highly successful cruise, raiding commerce in the Indian Ocean, sinking or capturing 23 freighters, bombarding Madras, sinking a Russian cruiser and a French destroyer at Penang. No fewer than seven movies have been made about the Emden's exploits, which finally ended at the Battle of Cocos.

0/8 Rounds - The Battle of Tanga, also known as the Battle of the Bees, was a failed attempt by the British to capture Tanga, the main port of German East Africa. The German leader Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck gained enormous fame. His combined force of Germans and (native) Askari troops numbered barely 1000, and routed a British-Indian force of more than 8000 men supported by naval artillery. The battle was several times interrupted while troops had to flee attacks by aggressive African bees, leading to the popular name.

0/3 Rounds - The Battle of Givenchy was fought from December 18-22, 1914 The goal was to help ease the French, who were under heavy pressure at Arras, by attacking the Germans around Givenchy to keep them from reinforcing Arras. Sharp fighting broke out on 19 December when Indian troops from the Lahore division launched an attack, successfully capturing two lines of German trenches. However their success was short-lived as a prompt and aggressive counter-attack pushed the Indian troops back out again. On the 20th the Germans counter attacked and actually broke through the lines and occupied part of Givenchy until two British reserve battalions were brought into action. After severe fighting and casualties on both sides the fighting finally died down at the end of the 22nd, where both sides found themselves back to their original lines.

0/3 Rounds - On 16 November, Rear Admiral Franz Hipper—commander of the German battle cruiser squadron—persuaded his superior, Admiral Friedrich von Ingenohl, to ask the Kaiser's permission for a raid. U-17 was sent to investigate the area near Scarborough and Hartlepool for coastal defenses. The submarine reported little onshore defense, no mines within 12 miles of the shore and a steady stream of shipping.

Being an easy target to hit the Germans at approximately 8:10 on the morning of December 16, 1914, commanded by Admiral Franz von Hipper, unleashed a bombardment of the North Sea English seaports of Hartlepool, West Hartlepool, Whitby and Scarborough. The bombardment lasted until around 9:30 am the bombardment (of 1,150 shells) resulted in some 137 fatalities and 592 wounded. The two coastal defense batteries in Hartlepool (Heugh Battery and Lighthouse Battery) responded, firing 143 shells and damaging three German ships, including the heavy cruiser Blucher.

0/4 Rounds - After the Bergmann Offensive, the Russians continued to hold onto Ottoman Territory. In an effort to fight back against the Russians, the Germans and the Ottoman 3rd Army took on a joint mission in the capture of Ardahan and Sarikamish. In the Battle of Ardahan, the city was captured in an operation commanded by German Lt. Col. Stange. The mission of Stange Bey Detachment was to conduct highly visible operations to distract and pin Russian units. Stange Bey's initial mission was to operate in the Chorok region. The unit was materially assisted by the rebellious Adjars of the country, who seized the road. Later Enver modified the original plan toward supporting the Battle of Sarikamish by cutting the Russian support link to Sarikamish-Kars line. In a few short days, the 3rd Army received orders to advance towards Kars. In the face of the 3rd Army's advance Governor Vorontsov planned to pull the Russian Caucasus Army back to Kars. Yudenich ignored Vorontsov's wishes to withdraw, and stayed to defend Sarikamish. Enver Pasha assumed the personal command of the 3rd Army and ordered it into battle against the Russian troops.

0/2 Rounds - The Second Battle of the Masurian Lakes, also known as the Winter Battle of the Masurian Lakes, was the northern part of the Central Powers' offensive on the Eastern Front in the winter of 1915. The offensive was intended to advance beyond the Vistula River and perhaps knock Russia out of the war. German Chief of Staff Erich von Falkenhayn strongly believed that the war was going to be won on the Western Front and was hesitant to lend support to Paul von Hindenburg, commander of the Eastern Front. However Falkenhayn did eventually sanction Hindenburg's planned offensive. Hindenburg would personally lead the northern offensive in the area of the Masurian Lakes. General Alexander von Linsingen would lead an attack against the Russians in the Carpathians aimed at Lemberg, and further south General Borojevic von Bojna would attempt to relieve the besieged fortress at Przemysl.

The Austrian army had still not recoverd from the disaster of Galicia, and now the German army was also reeling back after the defeat at Lodz. Very little help was available for Przemysl. A relief force was sent, but failed to reach the city. The Russian artillery never stopped, and in addition to combat casualties there were many losses to disease, starvation, and frostbite. 0/7 Rounds - One of the characteristics of a World War is that many nations, which are not declared war combatants, can still battle each other, as a periphery of the war. One of those cases is evident with the German Campaign in Angola. Between October 1914 and July 1915, the Germans and Portuguese clashed in Portuguese Angola, even though Germany and Portugal were not at war until March 1916!

0/8 Rounds - Most naval officers knew that it was futile to try to take control of the Dardanelles through sea power alone, and that control of the land would be required. However, Churchill and Augagneur were determined to try. The resulting debacle cost 5 battleships. For full discussion see the Great War forum thread.

0/5 Rounds - Acting governor Hans-Georg von Döring could not believe his ears. In accordance to the Congo Act he had sought neutrality accross the Congo Basin. After all, colonialists from all empires had a common goal. To control local populations and keep interdependent economies running. That was of course, until a few moments ago. British officer Captain Barker and the District commisioner from Keta had demanded the surrender of Togoland, one of the most developed colonies in Africa, under threat of attack. They had a mere 24 hours to prepare.

0/6 Rounds - The sun glimmered on the horizon unhesitatingly drawing down the skies. Lieutenant Colonel Sûleyman Askerî trodded on. The imminent split attack on the Qurna-Basra-Shaiba line grazed his thoughts. They had crossed into british mesopotamia in want of steady supplies and goods. If the Mesopotamian campaign was to succeed, control over the rivers and the fertile land would be crucial. He had brought 18.000 men with him, 4000 regulars and 14.000 arabs and kurds. In his mind he had no doubt they would prevail. The unholy demons would eventually subside against the impending force of Allah's great Ottoman army. Shaiba was his objectif. Command needed it cut off from Basra and the more than 6.000 British and Indian soldiers on their knees. Tomorrow, on april 11 his bombardment was scheduled to commence simultaneous to Qurna. Praise Allah and may he bestow his glory upon us.

0/4 Rounds - As the German strategy for 1915 emphasized the Eastern front, Ypres was the only place they made a real offensive in the West. The initial poison gas attack was so successful that it surprised not only the Allies but even the Germans, exceeding their expectations. A huge hole was ripped in the French line, and British and Canadian troops rushed in to plug it. The Canadian Expeditionary Force was acting independently for the first time, and their successful defense represented the first time that a former colony had beaten a major European power on European soil.

0/5 Rounds - Wary Liman Von Sanders sighed. Not one year ago he was both German officer and diplomat at the Ottoman court. Now he found himself in charge of Ottoman forces, still away from beloved Germany, disallowed to return. Perhaps a punishment for not convincing the Ottomans to join the war sooner. In a brief glimpse he studied the Ottoman war ministers' letter. A surprise attack on British-French forces to finally push them into the sea and end their Gallipoli campaign.

0/7 Rounds - From 1914 until 1916 Kamerun, back then slightly larger than current day Cameroon, fought valiantly isolated between enemy territories. Their discomforts originated from French Equatorial Guinea to the south and French Central Africa to the north-east, British Nigeria to the west and Belgian Congo to the south-east. It was cumbersome task for the 6000 Germans to hold when facing such asymmetrical disadvantage.

0/9 Rounds - After the terrible beating the Central Powers had taken at Przemysl and Lodz, the Russian star seemed to be rising, and the Austro-Hungarian army seemed to be on the verge of total collapse. The German High Command could not let their primary ally die, so they shifted their strategic emphasis for 1915 from the Western Front to the Eastern Front. With the aid of substantial German reinforcements, the Austro-Hungarians were able to recover. Soon, it was the Russians who were falling apart. 0/4 Rounds - The second battle of Artois, 9 May-18 June 1915, was the most important part of the Allied spring offensive of 1915. It was hoped to capture Vimy Ridge, break through the German lines, and advance into the Douai plain. This would cut key German railway lines and perhaps force them to retreat from their great salient bulging out into France. The first part of the plan, a British advance over the Aubers Ridge, was a total failure. The French attack at Vimy Ridge, on the other hand, was a huge success. Unfortunately, with the British contained, the Germans were able to refocus their reserves and push the French back. In the end, no objective was achieved. 0/7 Rounds - Luigi Cadorna, the Italian chief of staff, peered at his map as it lay on the table. His heart raced at a horse's pace despite the absence of any action. About a month ago Italy had formally delcared its intentions, join the 'Triple Entente' against the 'central powers'. The plan filled him with anticipation. He retraced their offensive plan gently brushing the map with the top of his finger. Objectif was to surprise the Austro-Hungarians across the river Isonzo and to disable enemy mobility on the frontline. Little did he know he was making the same disastrous mistakes as the western front in Flanders and France.

Under the command of english general Alexander Godley they led an assault on the Sari Bair range, a set of barren hills projecting in front of the coastline. The capture of the range's two peaks, Hill 971 and Chunuk Bair, would offer considerable relief to beach positions. The operation was one among several in a grand august offensive against the Ottoman empire. Objectif, break the stalemate and capture Chunuk Bair in the night of August 7th 1915.

0/6 Rounds - The amphibious landing at Suvla Bay was part of the August Offensive (the final British attempt to break the deadlock of Gallipoli). The landing commenced on the night of August 6th, 1915. Despite facing only light opposition, the landing at ended in a stalemate due to mismanagement. On August 15th, Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Stopford was dismissed due to his inactivity and indecision. His performance in command was one of the most incompetent feats of generalship of the First World War. For a more complete discussion, see the Great War thread in the forum.

0/3 Rounds - Barely two weeks later, the fighting was renewed. The Italians had made some progress, although in the era of trench warfare that didn't mean much. This was the last of the battles in 2014, as the winter chill began to set in. Both armies had now taken heavy casualties and were under-supplied. The Austrians begged the Germans to declare war on Italy. However, it wasn't until August of 1916 that Italy declared war on Germany. 0/6 Rounds - The French Armee d'Orient landed in Thessalonika and advanced northward in Macedonia to try to protect the Salonika-Skopje railway line and resupply the Serbs. Arriving at Niš, they found they were too late, and the line between Niš and Skopje was already under Bulgarian Control. Despite this, the French fought vigorously, first attacking eastward towards the Bulgarian front and then on the defensive, as new Bulgarian forces arrived from the North. He succeeded in capturing this location, but lost 1,600 men in the process and could not continue to Kut. Thus it ranks in the history books as a defeat. 0/6 Rounds - With the main advance at Verdun completely stalled, Crown Prince Wilhelm decided to try a flanking movement, pivoting on the left bank of the Meuse and taking out the French artillery batteries along the Bois Bourrus Ridge. On the way was a large hill ominously named Le Mort-Homme (the Dead Man). This had to be seized, and it was here and on neighbouring Hill 304 that some of the bloodiest encounters of the Verdun campaign took place.

0/8 Rounds - With the French fighting for their very survival at Verdun, they begged their allies to launch new offensives against the Germans to take the pressure off of France. The British responded with a very ambitious offensive on the Somme, the Russians began a somewhat-less ambitious offensive in the Lake Naroch region, and the Italians offered up the least ambitious offensive of all, the Fifth Battle of the Isonzo. 0/11 Rounds - The Austro-Hungarian offensive was underway. The Aus/Hun High Command took 18 divisions from the Eastern front -- 400,000 men and 2,000 heavy guns. Their hope was to surprise and smash the Italians in The Alps, break through to the Venetian Plain, and cut the southern Italian forces at the Isonzo river off, thus knocking Italy out of the war. Early successes almost made it possible, until a brave last stand by the Italians on the Venetian Plain. This victory allowed Italy to stay in The First World War. 0/6 Rounds - The First Day of the Battle of the Somme saw some of the worst losses for the British Empire. There were several nations involved in the battle, including the Newfoundland Regiment, who were with the 88th Brigade of the 29th Division.

Of all the battles that the Newfoundland Regiment fought during the First World War, none was as devastating or as defining as the first day of the Battle of the Somme. The Regiment's tragic advance at Beaumont Hamel on the morning of July 1, 1916 became an enduring symbol of its valour and of its terrible wartime sacrifices. The events of that day were forever seared into the cultural memory of the Newfoundland and Labrador people.

The first five offensives along the Isonzo River were total failures. The sixth, however, saw some success and the capture of Gorizia. Emboldened, the Italians decided to attack again. This time, however, was more like the first five than the sixth. One of the Austrian officers referred to the Italian attack as "an attempt at mass suicide."

Progress on this eastern flank of the British line was essential if the French and British were to cooperate properly north of the Somme. By the start of September the capture of Guillemont was becoming more urgent, as the plans for an attack north toward Flers and Courcelette began to take shape.

The successful attack on Guillemont was made by XIV corps.

The southern part of the attack on 3 September suffered the most heavily. The leading waves of the first battalion to attack were wiped out by German fire. To their left the 95th Brigade captured its first three objectives, and reached a line east of Guillemont.

The attack on Guillemont began from a series of trenches very close to the German front line. The village itself had been destroyed by repeated artillery bombardments, but underneath it was a maze of German strong points. Despite this the 20th Division attack succeeded.

The advance east of Guillemont continued over the next three days. By the end of 6 September the British had reached their target line, around Leuze Wood, and were ready to turn north to deal with Ginchy. Everything would soon be in place for the next big attack, at Flers-Courcelette.

0/7 Rounds - The Battle of Pozieres began with the capture of Pozieres by the Anzac or Australian Imperial Force, the only British success in the Allied fiasco of July 23rd. It broke down into separate attacks due to communication failures and poor weather. German bombardments and counter-attacks began on the 23rd of July and lasted until August 7th. The fighting ended when the Anzac Corps Reserve Army took the plateau north and east of Pozieres, overlooking the German stronghold of Thiepval. A costly British victory.

The Battle of Flers-Courcelette was a large, long planned battle that ended up using two new tactical innovations - A creeping artillery barrage, and for the first time in history, tanks.

The creeping barrage, instead of trying to annihilate the enemy, was a slow raking forward of thousands of shells, advancing 100 yards at a time. It was not meant to destroy the trenches, but to drive the enemy into them. Then the infantry would closely follow the barrage, in order to get into No Man's Land before the enemy could emerge from the trenches and fire at them.

The infantry was also accompanied by the tanks, also known as Land Sharks. The battle was to include 49 tanks, but most never made it into battle for various different reasons. In the end, only 15 of the tanks made it into No Man's Land. At 28 tons, the Mark 1 tanks could only move forward at a half mile per hour, at the walking pace of the infantry.

The eighth battle of the Isonzo was the second of three short-lived offensives launched on the Isonzo front in the autumn of 1916. The seventh battle, fought by the Italian Third Army had ended after four days without making any significant progress.

For the eighth battle the Italian Second and Third Armies were used. This gave the Italians 225 battalions, 26 dismounted cavalry squadrons, 1,305 guns and 883 mortars. They faced 107 Austrian battalions supported by 538 guns. The Italian bombardment began on 9 October. On 10 October the Italian infantry attacked in heavy rain, and captured large parts of the Austrian front line, along with 5,034 POWs. Mt. Sober, east of Gorizia and Nova Vas on the Carso plateau were both captured.

The offensive had to be suspended on 11 October because of heavy fog. It was renewed for one day on 12 October, and the Italians were able to push the Austrians to the east of the River Vallano, but at the end of the day the offensive was cancelled. The Italians lost 24,000 men during the battle, most of them on 10 and 12 October, while capturing 8,200 POWs.

The Eighth Battle of the Isonzo had barely ended when another one began. Cadorna once again threw his forces forward, and at first had tremendous success. A hole was torn in the Austrian lines 5 kilometers wide and 3 kilometers deep.

For three days the Italians savaged the Austrians and a massive Austrian counter-attack failed.

By the third day an Austrian collapse appeared imminent. Boroevic had only one reserve battalion left -- an ethnically mixed unit from the Banat -- and in desperation threw it into a counter-attack. Against all odds, the tiny counter-attack succeeded where a much larger one had failed. The Italian advance paused, and during the pause Cadorna lost his nerve. Unaware of just how little the Austrians had left, he ordered a halt to the offensive. The Austrians were saved, and the onset of winter prevented a resumption of hostilities until the following spring.

The Battle of Romani was the last ground attack by the Central Powers on the Suez Canal. It was fought near the Egyptian town of Romani, the site of ancient Pelusium on the Sinai Peninsula. The Central Powers' forces led by Gen. von Kressenstein squared off against the British Imperial forces led by Gen. Murray. The battle ended as a British victory, although by hesitating they allowed von Kressenstein was allowed to make an amazing rearguard escape.

As we have described in previous tournaments, with the entry of Bulgaria into the war, the balance of power in the Balkans shifted drastically in favour of the Central Powers. Serbia, which had managed to keep the Austro-Hungarian Empire at bay since the start of the war, finally collapsed. Attempting to withdraw the Serbian Army south to meet up with French forces in Greece, one of the routes taken was through Montenegro and Albania. The Austrians decided the time had finally come to knock Montenegro out of the war.

The Austro-Hungarian forces had a 3-1 numerical superiority as well as superior weapons, equipment, and experience. Nonetheless, the Montenegrins were dug in and fighting on home turf.

The fighting peaked on January 7th, the Orthodox date for Christmas. Thus, the day is remembered as "Bloody Christmas" in (mostly Orthodox) Montenegro. In deep snow, the final Austrian assault was beaten back and the Austrians were forced to retreat with heavy loss of life.

At Koprukoy, the Russians badly mauled the Turkish army and forced it to retreat. The Turks lost about 20,000 of their 65,000 troops , while the Russians lost about 12,000 of the 75,000 they started with. Russian General Nikolai Yudenich now had numerical superiority, as well as technological superiority, better trained troops, and momentum.

Erzerum was a fortress city with powerful defenses. Defenses, however, are worthless without men to guard them. The Turks did not have enough troops left to man all of the strong-points on their perimeter. The Russians laid down a blistering artillery barrage, and attacked wherever they liked. If they found some sector strongly held, they simply switched to a different point. The Russians climbed the Kargapazar Ridge, which the Turks believed to be impassable and hadn't bothered to fortify. In rapid succession the many forts surrounding Erzerum were captured.

In the end, Erzerum was taken in only six days, a stunning humiliation for a fortress city. It brings to mind the shocking collapse of Singapore in WWII.

The Russians were now strongly ascendant in the whole region. A couple months later, they made their victory complete by capturing the proud and ancient city of Trebizond. The Russian Navy now had a Turkish port to supply the army.

The situation on the Western Front continued to be dominated by trench warfare, resulting in very heavy casualties whenever an assault was made. Fromelles was no exception. An attempt was made to take the village of Fromelles on the heavily-fortified Aubers Ridge.

The newly-arrived 5th Australian Division had the central role in the assualt, and 5,500 diggers would not be returning home. 1,500 Brits and 1,000 Germans also died.

Allegedly, the attack was mounted to put pressure on the Germans and prevent them from transferring reserves to the Somme. In that respect it was a failure, for the Germans did indeed transfer reserves to the Somme shortly after the battle. A German intelligence assessment called the attack "operationally and tactically senseless". The official Australian historian, C.E.W. Bean, wrote that "the Bavarians might have doubted that the British would sacrifice 7,000 men as a decoy," but in fact that's exactly what they did.

The heavy casualties and the dubious importance of the operation demoralized the Australian Corps and caused friction between Australian and British leaders.

The two old principalities of Moldova and Vallachia formed a personal union with the election of the same ruling Romanian prince - Alexandru Ioan Cuza, which failed to be recognized by the rest of the European powers of the time. In order to secure international recognition, the political establishment sought for a foreign prince from Europe's great ruling families and found Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, related to the Prussian dynastic family.

Karl quickly and diligently began carrying his duties as a ruler. He took the Romanian name of Carol and pledged himself and his dynastic family to Rumania's religion, law and interests. Under his reign, Rumania adopted its first Constitution, fought alongside Russia in the Russian-Turkish war and gained independence from Ottoman rule, began structural modernization with rail-road infrastructure, city architecture and military structuring. However he didn't forget his German origins and secretly signed a Treaty with Germany and Austro-Hungaria in 1883, tying Rumania to the Triple Alliance.

Rumania's elite and, in various measures, the political establishment, were greatly influenced by the French culture and politics of the age. Further, the national aspiration was to unify with other Rumanian-speaking provinces under Hungarian control, which meant opposition to the Central Powers. The general Rumanian public at the start of the Great War was decisively set towards the Entente.

Carol's wish to be firmly allied with German nations clashed directly with the popular sentiment. Still conflicted and unhappy, Carol died in 1914, leaving the throne his nephew Ferdinand. Ferdinand and his wife (Marie of Edinburgh) began steering a course closer to the Allied side, although the country remained officially neutral.

In August 1914, the Allies signed the Treaty of Bucharest, guaranteeing Rumania all the land they claimed which was under Austro-Hungarian control -- the Banat, Transylvania, and Bukovina. The allies also promised 300 tons of supplies for Rumania every month, and to immediately launch a new offensive from Greece. These last two provisions were never upheld, but the promise was enough to finally entice Rumania into joining the war.

The Battle of Passchendaele or "Battle of Mud" was fought in a village named for Christ's Passion and Death. The British Empire's forces led by Gen. Douglas Haig would be up against the German Empire's forces led by Gen. Erich Ludendorff. The British plan was to take Passchendaele and the surrounding area, then push through to the Belgian coast and capture the German submarine pens there.

Passchendaele had a village, a ridge and farms turned into forts. During the battle each side would capture one while losing another. Around in a circle the battle went. Massive artillery bombardment had churned the ground. When the rains came, the shell craters turned into mud pits.

In the mud pits, stringing phone lines or sending couriers became impossible. The ancient art of sending carrier pigeons became the only way to successfully communicate.

Every part of the British Empire contributed troops. It was the Canadians who finally took the ridge, an enduring boost to the reputation of the Canadian Army and a source of national pride.

The Polish Legions had a double purpose: they served the Austro-Hungarian Empire of which they were part, but their ultimate aim was to pave the way for the restoration of an independent Poland. Jozef Pilsudski, founder of the Polish Legions, believed that Austria-Hungary would disintegrate spontaneously. The most dangerous enemy of Polish independence was Russia, and Russia would have to be beaten for Polish independence to be restored.

The Polish Legions effectively held the Steyr region from the start of the war, and were respected by the German and Austro-Hungarian commands. With the opening of the Brusilov Offensive in 1916, however, the Poles were attacked by a much larger Russian Corps than they had previously faced. Despite fierce resistance, they did eventually succumb.

This will be a very simple tournament, based on the map, WWII Poland, which celebrates Polish resistance in the great war after the Great War. All games will use the basic settings that are most popular on this map: Escalating, Foggy, Chained.

Soon after entering the war, Rumania launched an offensive north into Transylvania. At first everything went well. Meanwhile, however, they suffered a catastrophic defeat in the south, as the Bulgarians captured the fortress of Turtucaia, killing or capturing almost 80,000 Rumanian troops. Needing to move troops south to prevent a complete collapse, the Rumanians had to abandon their advance in the north, allowing the Austro-Hungarians and their German allies to mount a counteroffensive. The war, which seemed to have gone so well for Rumania at first, was rapidly turning into a loss.

General Sir Frederick Stanley Maude, KCB, CMG, DSO

With its frontier mentality, the Army of India had rushed into Mesopotamia full of piss and vinegar, and stunning early successes fueled the hubris of men like Arthur Barrett, Charles Townshend, and George Gorringe.

After the catastrophic loss at Kut, everything changed. London was no longer prepared to let the Delhi cowboys run their own show. General Sir Frederick Stanley Maude was sent to take charge of the Mesopotamia Campaign. A career officer, born on the British Army base in Gibraltar, General Maude had a traditional Sandhurst education, had served in adjutant positions in South Africa and Canada, and had seen combat in France and on the beaches of Gallipoli, but never in India. A careful and methodical planner, he was pretty much the opposite of the adventurers in command of the Army of India.

In fact, Maude was nicknamed "Systematic Joe" for his cautious approach. The wild and crazy days on the Mesopotamian Front were over. With Systematic Joe in charge, t's were to be crossed and i's were to be dotted!

A new advance up the Tigris began on the night of 13/14 December. British victory was on the way, not with spectacular adventures like the previous year, but solid, methodical, and very British.

The defeat at Romani ended the German and Turkish plans to seize the Suez Canal. After Romani there was a long period of British ascendancy in the region.

The town of El Arish was abandoned by the Turks and the British entered without resistance. South of El Arish, however, was the fortified oasis of Maghdaba. It was not a large fortification, but well-designed, and held by approximately 2,000 troops. Von Kressenstein believed its main defense, however, was not its fortifications but the overextended British supply line, which would prevent the British from operating effeciently in the region. Two things von Kressenstein hadn't counted on were: the efficiency of the British railway network in Africa, and the resourcefulness of the ANZAC Mounted Corps, composed of graziers and ranchers from the wilder parts of Australia and New Zealand who were accustomed to fighting on short rations.

Using the swift mobility of their horses to completely surround Maghdaba, the ANZACs attacked from all directions at once. The New Zealand Mounted Rifles dismounted and attacked on foot, while the British Horse Artillery and the Imperial Camel Corps deployed and provided covering fire whenever they were needed. The attack was almost a perfect textbook example of how to execute a combined attack of this type. The ANZACs suffered 22 dead and 124 wounded versus the Turkish loss of 300 dead and nearly 1500 captured.

0/3 Rounds - On January 9th, General Maude launched an attack on heavily fortified Turkish positions at the Khadairi Bend of the TIgris River. It was a good opportunity for the new commander to get familiar with his troops and vice-versa. One interesting feature of the battle was that Maude's troops dug secret tunnels to within small-arms shooting distance of the Turkish line. Tunneling was by this point very common on the Western Front, but it had not previously been seen in the Mesopotamian Campaign. The battle also featured a very heavy artillery barrage before he main assault, another taste of the Western Front.

The battle raged for three weeks, until the last fort was taken on January 29th.

HMS Tarantula

Just a few days after the British recaptured Kut from the Ottomans, Captain Henry Graham Sherbrooke was to attack Turkish troops fleeing from the defeat. But Sherbrooke overshot his own army and ended up 30 kilometers down river. His 3 British gunboats soon came under attack near Nahr-al-Kalek. Four gunboats of the Turkish navy fired away, including a British gunboat called the Firefly, which the Turks had captured earlier. Sherbrooke's gunboat the Tarantula, along with the Mantis and the Moth, returned fire. They destroyed the three Turkish boats and recaptured the Firefly. On their way back to Kut, the British flotilla captured 700 Turkish soldiers fleeing along the Tigris river's shoreline. A total British victory!

After the triumph at Kut-el-Amarah, General Maude continued towards Baghdad. A very indecisive Khalil Pasha vacillated between several different defense plans. Any of the options may have stopped the British advance, but ultimately Khalil's indecision cost him dearly. None of the defensive plans were adopted in time, and in the end Baghdad had to be abandoned after only light skirmishes on the outskirts. The British entered the city almost unopposed.

The Samarrah Offensive was launched by British Gen. F.S.Maude to take the railyard at Samarrah from Khalil Pasha's Ottoman forces. Gen.Maude had 4 objectives 1)Drive Khalil's 6th army north. 2)Stop Ali Ishan Bey's 8th corp of 15,000 men from joining Khalil. 3)Take the railyard at Samarrah to prevent the Turks from reinforcing and resupplying. 4)Secure the dams around Baghdad, so the Turks don't flood the region. Although a success, the Samarrah Offensive cost the British over 18,000 casualties,a high price to pay, along with another 38,000 men would become seriously ill.

Gen. Maude ordered the seizure of Fallujah to prevent the Turkish Army from flooding the area around the Euphrates river basin. He ordered the dams to be secure and the town taken. The Ottoman Army was demoralized after the fall of Baghdad. In 8 days Fallujah surrendered without a fight. Quite the opposite of the grueling battle that Coalition forces were to encounter there in the following century.

0/3 Rounds - A new Ottoman force under Ali Isha Bey was being assembled in the far north of Mesopotamia to relieve Ali Pasha's forces near Baghdad. General Maude dispatched a force under General Keary to crush Isha's army. He expected that the Turks would be crushed between British forces moving north and Russian forces pushing south. What they did not know was that the Russian Revolution had caused so much desertion in the ranks that the Russians were no longer a fighting force.
