Its both Americas (sterio typically) most endearing quality and frustrating attribute. The fact that so many blindly support their country and its achievments with little real understanding of impact or opposing arguments.

In all seriousness though, I would have to say Jerusalem..

Jihad, the crusades.... For thousands of years control of the city has been contested by the world's major powers. Empires have risen and fallen in pursuit of this city.

It's one of the most sacred sites for all three of the worlds great monotheistic religions (almost half the world's population) and even today the fate of Jerusalem will profoundly affect the world..

The city could very well be the fuse which ignites the world's next great war.

I take it all back..

The most important city the world has ever known is actually Lancaster Pennsylvania..

So no more Devils Advocate for me.

Truly I could see someone choosing one of those, but the answer has got to be Rome or London right? Likewise could it be Berlin just for ending the British Empire?

I'm not too sure just how east you need to go Juan, but have you ever thought that possibly St Petersburg might be slightly more important than Hiroshima?

The February Revolution (March 1917) was a revolution focused around St Petersburg.
It was the city that gave rise to the Russian Revolution and then the spread of communism....

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's more important than Babylon, but you have your American blinkers on. America bombed Nagasaki - So Nagasaki is important.

..civilisation and law is more important than the capital of some loose fragmented empire/religious sect copying and twisting old knowledge.

Surely Stalingrad is #1 for Russia cities. WWII has been way more important to the world then the rise of communism (although they are heavily interlinked).

What I'm going for is the way the world completely changed as Russia and the United States entered the Cold War, with the threat of Nuclear Winter looming overhead. I can't think of another period in history when two countries hated each other so much, but didn't do anything about it. The whole worldwide political landscape after Nagasaki changed, and not just because of the war itself. But anyway, I was just throwing it out there. Still, Hiroshima imo is more important than Kyoto/Tokyo as far as global importance goes. It's difficult to nominate an Asian City if only because of the Huns and Japan's isolationism.

Rome is the most important city ever, followed by London.

Been to Wisconsin, but also been elsewhere. The heaviest culture of drinkers is not in the US.. sorry. A couple of individuals, perhaps, might make the "cut" (particularly since we get a lot of immigrants). But heaviest drinking communities.. no way.

Pedronicus wrote:To all Americans who didn't choose an American City. Well done.

Happy now?

All I'm saying is that too many Americans, when given a question about anything to do with the globe, always seem to plump for an American answer.
I live in London, the epicentre of the worlds largest ever empire, but I wouldn't ever shout London. Why? - Because I can see the bigger picture.
Does that help to explain my frustration at some of the American-centric answers given in this thread?

I don't think that's the case at all. First of all, I'm pretty sure maybe one American picked a US city in this thread. So, evidence doesn't bear what you think out (at least with this thread).

What I do think is that the Bumpage forum is full of American posters who talk about what's important to them (namely stuff here). And as far as I can tell, it's okay to be proud of your country and its cities. I've said it before, and I'll say it again; if you want to talk about non-US centric shit, start some threads. I'll gladly discuss. Anyway, your continuous "Americans are stupid" rantings could, potentially, give credence to the idea that you are a typical European who hates Americans.

The weapons dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuclear weapons. Therefore, those cities were nuked. I don't understand your point.

I have never seen my stepfather drink anything non-alcoholic. Ever.

The eastern empire was wrecked by crusaders and turks before the mongols came.

I think he meant Huns and Visigoths instead of Mongols.

I am not sorry. I am from Northern Wisconsin and I can tell you the drinking in WI is the worst in the US. I've been just about everwhere in the US and some places in Europe. At my age it is a source of mild embarassment not a source of pride.
