as far as i know, He loves all of us very much. How am supposed to know what the purpose of hell is? I'm not God, i'm only human.

He also showed his love by turning a woman into a pillar of salt for disobeying an arbitrary command. God is an abusive partner on a grand scale, "I torture you because i love you! you made me do this!"

Hell is other people, or so I've heard. Becoming a hermit seems like the logical course of action.

Christians say hell was created as a result of free will, (basically). Protestants generally believe it is the absence of God.

Roman Catholics came up with purgatory because they felt being punished was necessary to remove evil, to be forgiven. To a Roman Catholic those who's sins are too great, who don't take forgiveness wind up in hell. Protestants generally do not believe in purgatory.

People have had free will. Freedom means being able to choose very, very bad choices as well as good ones. Per the pillar... in that time, life was generally cruel, humans were very cruel to each other. Now, we consider ourselves "civilized"... but, well... we also think nothing of building a plant that might operate for 50 years but that creates toxic waste we know won't disappear for over 500 years. (and for which we have no true safe disposal).

We pay 100% of medical care until children reach 18, no matter how expensive or what the outcome. Then we say "oops, sorry.. you are an adult now so you don't need fulltime care any more".

So... maybe a pillar of salt is not such a bad fate.

So, I was thinking today.. if Satan is god's enemy, why would he torture us for not obeying god? I don't understand it. Satan would be on our side if we blasphemed our entire lives. Premarital sex, divorces, illegitimate children, having false idols, not believing in god, and all the other innumerable "sins" we commit would be all and well with the devil, right? So if there is a hell, and I'm sure I am going there, Satan should greet us at the fiery gates with a case of beer while he shakes our hands and says "I WAS on your side all along."

Wasn't purgatory created so that when one dies, their remaining living family has enough time to make donations to the Catholic Church, thus securing a passage to Heaven?

I thought Purgatory was created so that Jesus and Noah have somewhere to vacation while Moses does his annual rendition of the play "Grease".
