another problem is deadbeats. If someone on team 1 didn't take their turn, someone on team 2 is up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

It's a good idea but would not be very popular - team games usually involve friends or co-inhabiters playing on the same team.

Avoid joining a game that high ranked players have rigged for points. AKA, if three high ranked players have started a triples game, let them sit there doing nothing forever, don't join it.
