Re: Come ye faithful and ye atheist rabble.

"Why do humans derive pleasure from stimuli (light, sound) that they find aesthetically pleasing? "

Is it just me or does that question eat it's own tail? It's the linguistic equivalent of asking "why do humans derive enjoyment from things that they find enjoyable?" or "why do humans derive pain ...

Re: Come ye faithful and ye atheist rabble.

In other words, your root question is: "why do we derive pleasure from sunsets and beautiful things?," or

"Where, exactly, does our appreciation and enjoyment of beautiful things come from?"

Well... what kind of explanation are you looking for?

Are you asking about a locality? Are you asking ...

Re: Come ye faithful and ye atheist rabble.

Since we've gotten past the typical opening salvos for this type of argument, I thought I'd toss a log or two into the fire as well.

Where, exactly, does our appreciation and enjoyment of beautiful things come from? Not necessarily beautiful people (we can all probably be pretty confident about ...

How'd you like the Sandia mountains? I lived in ABQ for 4 years and never got tired of watching the sunset illuminating the Sandias.

How are rights inherent? And which rights exactly?

Just Google "human rights". It's pretty well laid-out and "right to life" is among the first that pops up. Basic natural rights are inherent in that we recognize that everyone has them. The government doesn't "give" these rights to anyone, they ...

No, I took a general principle -- we don't give the rights of X to a potential X -- and gave a couple of examples of it. What you are doing is what doesn't hold up to logical reasoning; you're asserting that we should give the rights of a person to a potential person, but you are unwilling to ...

It seems that the "potential fetus" argument doesn't provide further clarity to the issue.

If you're looking for a one-size-fits-all easy solution, you're not going to find one. It looks like you're wanting someone to tell you what to think because you can't bother to do it for yourself. The ...

Not gonna chime in on the argument here, but just gotta say that this poll would be, in social science terms, "omfgwtfareyouthinking biased". Seriously, if you want real results, give a real poll. Not your opinion dressed up as a poll.

Re: 336 Million

So, if we accept the "potential human" argument, then what are the implications?

1. Women lose their property rights over their own body (i.e. they can't evict the trespasser/unwanted fetus).
1a. To get around this, we can say, "oh, women's property rights > fetus' property rights."

2. Women ...

Re: 336 Million

I destroy the potential for a new person every minute that I'm not having sex. Yes, I don't deny that one can make the argument that a fetus is much more likely to be a human being. But that argument carries no moral weight. As I alluded to earlier, there's quite a good chance that Prince Charles ...

Actually, I'm not sure the issue is hugely complex (logically speaking). I'll defer to Mets (and others) for logic, but as I understand his position, if the organism in question is not able to recognize itself in a mirror, it lacks cognitive capabilities and therefore does not have a right to life ...

Hmm, you're surprised by that huh? you're still completely destroying the potential for a new person.
Others seem to be having some difficulty deciding what constitutes "person" these days. Including one that's actually escaped the womb.

The problem here comes from the fact that we treat ...

I agree to a certain extent, but I have no empathy for abortions that take place before a fetus is even capable of feeling pain or having desires (the first several weeks of pregnancy). Prior to that point, I don't think much more of abortion than I would swatting an insect, at least in terms of ...

Another update- all graphics on this one. Took natty's advice with using the ink tool, and I like the results. Except for the region boundaries- I'll probably go through with a smaller brush on the next update.

I like this, it puts a little twist on city maps. It'll be fun to watch it go through the foundry.

Surely there must be a better name than, "The pedestrian area" for a territory?

well it is "The pedestrian area" and a very huge area to, it got the longest walking street in europe, 6 km long, so ...

I kinda agree, in that I don't think uniqueness as such is the primary criteria for creating good works. I see it from a more utilitarian view: do what works for the particular project, if it happens to be different from the earlier ones, good, if not, that's good too. That said, I think there's ...

Andy's wording is better, I think. A castle is a river crossing, because people can use it to cross the river which it straddles. A castle cannot ford a river, as a castle does not move.

As long as it gets changed. Maybe just, "Castles bridge rivers" would work. Short, clear, and to the point.

Re: The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 V2 [12/3/2011] (page 2)

Firstly, how do you draw your territory borders and icons? The line work seems a bit messy and pixelated... I can probably suggest a few things to fix that. Do you use a mouse or tablet?

I use a tablet, usually at a 1-pixel sized non-fuzzy brush. I'm pretty new to brushes, which might explain ...
