Re: Evolution

I love discussions about evolution starting to agree with Dawkins that it's not really worth discussing it with intelligent design folk though.

A lot of problems I think stem from misinterpreting the scientific word "theory" from "theory" in commonly used English. A theory has a LOT of evidence ...

Just to add to this - healthcare is a right in the United Kingdom. However, in some countries it's not considered a right. /'s description covers both situations.

Re: Rights v Privileges

For me, the two aren't really directly correlated.

A right is a rule prescribed in one’s favor; I take this word “right” to be identical to the word “right” meaning “correct”. For example if I go on a tour of an orchard and the sign says “You may take one apple”, it is my “right” to do so as it is ...

A poll for curiousity and a share of an article written in the National Review.

Without any disrespect to the enormous intellectual achievement of these scientists, let me state that I identify with the mass of humanity that doesn’t really care about the existence of the Higgs boson.

Re: What should/would/did you tell your kids about Santa?

I was one of the last kids in our school to believe in Father Christmas, and fully intend to let any children I might have enjoy that belief too. Sure, they'll find out eventually - but I'd certainly hope that they'd realise how much fun it was believing in it, and also that they'd learn about what ...

Or, often just a bunch of egotistical people trying to tell women what to do with their bodies.
This.

It's the woman's body, so it's her choice. Telling people what they should or should not do with their bodies is ridiculous. What right exactly does anyone have to do that?

IMO a foetus starts ...

Re: A fairy tale of free market public services

But the trains are the issue. The Conservative government, in their wisdom, decided that free markets would be better than a nationally held rail system. It'd be a brighter tomorrow, one more efficient, and cheaper!

Sadly we have reality, and free market fantacism didn't quite live up to the hype ...

Re: Let's have an epic discussion about religion!

I believe in pretty much everything.

I don't believe in evolution; I think there is a sufficient amount of evidence to prove evolution so belief is not really the right word.

I think the structure of the Catholic church is fine although I think women priests should be permitted. I think the ...

Re: Let's have an epic discussion about religion!

And what about religious indoctrination of children? Should faith schools be allowed for example?
Yes, within reason, but they shouldn't teach nonsense (eg no 'intelligent design' rubbish). Let's not forget that the church were pioneers in offering free education. They aren't all bad . But they do ...

Re: Let's have an epic discussion about religion!

Well, Gillipig. I'm an atheist too. I agree with you that religion is often harmful, but I'm not in favour at all of militant action against it. Freedom of speech and thought is very, very important and people shouldn't be prevented from thinking things, even if they're totally wrong about them. I ...

Re: I need REAL advice on my web page.....

Looks to me like it's autogenerating the page from PHP/ASP/somethinglikethat. If that's the case, your options are to learn whatever language it's written in, pay someone else to do it for you or do the website again, yourself. Sounds a bit harsh, but effectively those are your answers.

Re: Capitalism (then maybe later, free markets)

Capitalism is IMHO inevitable. You make a product (corn, hammers, ipods, whatever) then you exchange it for things that you want with people who want your things (swap corn for hammers, ipods for baking foil, whatever). Capitalism is wrongly blamed for a lot of wrongs.

In defense of that ...

Re: I vote Conservative

The Conservatives will lower spending on public services and cut taxes. This will give me more money to spend on goods and services.

This is better than Labour, who will raise taxes to fund more government spending on services. This would leave me with less money, and therefore less wealth with ...

As far as js menus, personally I prefer simple navigation menus which you can layout using css.
Me too I generally do them first in HTML (...), then make them look pretty (and work) with CSS, then finally add JS if it needs them (eg sometimes if you have a dropdown menu, it's nice to allow someone ...
