Wow, I thought this one was a classic. But you're as close as you could be. It's actually the game that was the foundation and inspiration for worms and so many other popular games [The Genre of Multiplayer Platform/2D shooters]. And it was freeware!! My favorite offshoot is Soldat, which is also ...

I'd say it's a worm hit by poison stuff, so my guess will be Worms 2 (although I can't really remember when that was introduced).
