Check out Supremacy-its a mix of Risk and Diplomacy.
Closer to risk really, but its a class board game, 4 players ideal, but do able with 3.

The board game KingMaker is a classic, quite long, but excellent strateg game.
Brittania is EPIC will take you all day, but its brilliant.
Civilization (the board game from Avalon, pre-Sid Meier) is excellent but again it will take you all day.

Good suggestions Suggs.

Supremacy is great. It's been out of print for ages though good luck finding it. Diplomacy is awesome. This site will let you try it out online before you buy a copy. It's like Risk with no cards and no dice.

lots of CC 'ers on that site now. They even advertise CC among their players.

Titan is great from Avalon Hill (again if you can find it and have a day or three to play a war game).

I haven't played Kingmaker in years, but what an awesome game. Stellar Conquest was cool too.

... Squad Leader. Once you start... you won't be able to stop. Fantastically great squad-level war game.

... It IS complicated, however... but worth the time it takes to learn the rules, and winning has very little to do with luck.
