Ok guys and gals, i have seen you debate religion for a long time, swapping debates and opinions until you can type no more.
As much as religion is interesting my personal interest is with mythology and the affect various tales have had on differing cultures through out history. Truth be told i doubt this threa will break the 2 page mark but i thought i would try to guage interest.
What do you think of mythology and its affect on culture. Look back to your own country's or towns pastr and wonder what might have ben different had your anscestors created a new explaination or myth for the unknown.
I would like to hear about your countries myths and legends and yes, my personal faves are dragons so if you start with them expect me to be debating with you for days

Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols says a high-ranking FBI official "apparently" was directing Timothy McVeigh in the plot to blow up a government building and might have changed the original target of the attack, according to a new affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Utah.
The official and other conspirators are being protected by the federal government "in a cover-up to escape its responsibility for the loss of life in Oklahoma," Nichols claims in a Feb. 9 affidavit.
Documents that supposedly help back up his allegations have been sealed to protect information in them, such as Social Security numbers and dates of birth.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Utah had no comment on the allegations. The FBI and Justice Department in Washington, D.C., also declined comment.
In another report, the Deseret Morning News named the FBI agent at Larry Potts, but that information has now been sealed by the court.
Potts was no stranger to anti-government confrontations, having been the lead FBI agent at Ruby Ridge in 1992, which led to the shooting death of Vicki Weaver, the wife of separatist Randy Weaver.Potts also was reportedly involved in the 51-day siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas in 1993, which resulted in a fire that killed 81 Branch Davidian followers.
Potts retired from the FBI under intense pressure and criticism for the cover-up of an order to allow agents to shoot anyone seen leaving the Weaver cabin at Ruby Ridge.
"McVeigh said he believed Potts was manipulating him and forcing him to 'go off script,' which I understood meant to change the target of the bombing," Nichols stated.

Well, I'm not sure if this is more what you're looking for but here goes.
I grew up in Southern New Jersey where there's a large area known as "The Pine Barrens." It's mostly flat, sometimes boggy and full of pine trees that for some reason don't grow much over 6 feet. Everybody who lives around there knows someone who claims to have seen "The Jersey Devil" who inhabits the place. (Yes I believe that's where the name for the hockey team comes from) Problem is, there are almost as many stories of what he/it is as there are people who claim to have seen him/it.
Some say he's a person who went crazy, murdered his family and gained some kind of immortality like the characters from Friday the 13th and Halloween, continuing to slaughter unfortunate wanderers in the Pine Barrens. Most others say some kind of ghost or demon, or monster in human form. I saw it described as some kind of dragon in a book about local ledgends, but never heard that one among the many "Jersey Devil" stories I heard as a kid.
Anyway, it made for scary campfire stories when camping anywhere around there.
Near where I grew up is a rock feature called Darran Y Dimbath (sacred stone of the Dimbath) which is like a split in the hillside. It starts just over the brow, about an inch wide, and opens out to about 50 feet wide and in places is as much as 80 feet deep. It is a truly magical place.
The old legend that explains this says that the druid Taliesin Myrddin Ap Hennwg was on this hill and was arguing with the gods and in his anger drove his staff into the ground and split the mountain. It's easy to imagine this happening when you're actually standing at the beginning of the crack.
The effects of Mythology on a society? I fear this can only be discussed within the wider field of belief systems that humans create for themselves. But it would be fascinating to know where such stories originated from, if they just started out as something people told each other for entertainment and then the stories gradually got bigger and bigger and were "exported" into other regions when tribes moved. Or whether they were deliberately created at some point.
At any rate I think it's interesting how similar most pantheons are, most in and around Europe are so similar that it's almost enough to exchange a few names to get to one of the others. And then the symbolism, if I recall correctly the symbol of the celtic god of healing was a snake on a staff, the roman counterpart had two snakes on a staff. As some conspiracists like to say "Coincidence? You decide."

The dominant myth in english culture is one about a vengeful desert god, a virgin birth and a jewish zombie. Stop me if you've heard it...
One that is very popular out here in Wyoming is the Jackalope. A jackrabbit with the antlers of a pronghorn antelope, that can only be hunted one day a year, it's milk is very valuable and cure disease, but it is incredibly fast.
