Family ancestry, whats yours?

my family were first found in 1066 in essex and given land there for helping william the conquerer at the battle of hastings, alot of my family still live in london and essex also i have scottish and irish in me as well as a bit of polish recently after WW2 and could have a bit of chinese from the 17th century though i have brown hair and blue eyes born blond though

Ethnically, my dad's mestizo and my mom's Irish.

On my dad's side, my ancestors founded the city of San Antonio, fought in the Texas Revolution, and every single male ancestor between the ages of 14 and 40 in the early 1860s fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War.

My mom's people, on both of her parents' sides, came over as railroad workers in the 1880s and 90s.

My parents have gone mad with family reasearch and its pretty interesting what they've found,

Robert the Bruce
William Wallace
Sir Oliver Lodge (inventor of the radio, but Marconi got the credit, also the spark plug)
The Bishop of Litchfield
hundreds of other churchmen including a lot that went off to ireland for a few generations to convert them to C of E
Army guys in British ruled india
Mill-owners in Ayrshire
Gamekeepers in Lincolnshire
a huge amount of other Lincolnshire people
A variety of clans in scotland
and i'm sure theres more I've forgotten.

Family is mainly Irish, but what I have been able to find out is that they were once one of the most powerful families in Galway County, Ireland and had been so for quite some time.

Interesting muy thai....also mostly Irish, and my family name originates from Galway. One section of the direct translation of my last name has to do with "King of Connacht." Not sure if I spelled that right....

My father's side: shepherds in Lika and norhern Dalmatia, came in 19th century with Austro-hungarian army to Bihać (Bosnia and Herzegovina) where my grandparents were owners of the in and bar. My grandpa and his father in law (my great grandfather) were killed by Chetniks in WWII.

My mother's side: small gentry in Hungaria, came to Croatia to serve count Erdody in 18th century. So they were wardens of his forest till the end of WWII. My grandpa was a simple servant (son of a fief) that married to my grandma's big house. :wink:

in WW2 my grandad was a sergent already being a soldier in the 1930's guarging the khyber pass, British India now modern day pakistan, he resigned in the army unfortunately two years before the war only to be called up again where he was promoted to sergent, because of his experience so we have a history of being soldiers in my family

it is now possible to but i turned 18 over 18 years ago.

my family emigrated from England over 300 years ago. Ancestors of mine have fought in every American war, including the oft overlooked King Phillip's War. but my family was on the side of Metacomet.

i have some Delaware indian in me, but other than that, mostly WASPy to the max.

my dad's side was mostly military officers or sea captains, with one notable (for his time) writer included.

my mom's side was mostly doctors, lawyers, ministers, and one really, really famous American writer included.

so sometimes i feel like i should have enlisted in the military... but unlike generations past, i don't see the current conflict as necessary to my family's liberty, and am not sure i want to participate by taking up arms.

No claims of being related to Robert the Bruce / William Wallace etc. should be honoured in this thread. I physically cringe every time I read such a thing. Not because such a claim is necessarily a lie but because such links rely on such faint ties that it puts you in a group of potentially hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people. Pretty much anyone who has family resident in Europe (other than those whose direct ancestors where incestuous farmers who never left their village) can claim descent from Mel Bloody Gibson.

My ancestors immigrated from England and were amoung the first Colonials in Virginia.
Over the decades following their arrival they settled in what was then The Cherokee Nation, and married Cherokees.
So, I have English, Scottish, Irish and Cherokee heritage.

Interesting stuff brooksieb.

On my paternal side I am descended from a Noble who came over with William the Conq. In 1066. We were given lands across Hampshire and, oddly, in Glentoran some time later.

Next time we sprang to prominence was, ironically, at Crecy, during the 100 years war with the French. Leading a home-grown regiment of Bowmen. Latterly the family descended into obscurity.

However, early last century, my Great-grandfather was a boyhood friend of a high ranking Noble. This Noble got one of the servant girls in the family way. He asked my GG to marry her (as they were fond of each other). My GG agreed and brought the child up as his own. The 2 remained friends throughout their lives, my GG acting as ADC to the Noble. My GG always lived simply and frugally so it came as a complete shock when he died in the early 1960s to find out he, in fact, owned the freehold land of the best part of half of a small town and a small village nearby, a couple of tenant farms and various other parcels...some 2,500 acres in all, left to him by none other than his lifelong friend the Noble. The reasoning was pretty obvious. And, yes that child was my Grandmother.

My Maternal side is Irish, and, again ironically seeing my paternal line, quite a rebellious bunch. My Great-grandfather on her side was a rebel poet, shot by the Brits. His son actually ended up in England as they starved, joined the Irish guards (once again ironically) and found himself in Malta where he met a local girl, got her pregnant, and married her (well a good catholic Irish boy and a good Catholic Maltese girl, they would wouldn’t they)

So both my lines seem to be rich with irony, no wonder we, as a family, tend to look at life through an ironic prism.

Dude..... EVERYONE needs a kiss goodnight and a hug when you fall over is nice too.... just find a nice boy/girl/whatever and start your own clan.

I would agree with that as far as wallace is concerned, and also that by so long ago, most people would have beenb related to them in some way or other. but when it comes to bruce, i can trace my family directly back to him (or splitting off from the royal family at his grandson)

My husband's family are Stirlings, from Stirling Castle, they are also related to William Wallace. P.S. don't tell Guiscard
