I was in Cuba the year that Bush first got elected and the National TV channel thought the goings on in Florida were hilarious - lots of jokes about corruption and who the real bananna republic was. Yes the people are poor and repressed but they have superb healthcare and education provision ( free ) and a low crime rate that would be the envy of many countries. Im no communist and there is no doubt that Cuba has stagnated under Castro but it was hardly a paradise before when it was ruled by Batistas thugs and the Mafia, not exactly a capitalist role model.
Its easy to be smug about how backward you believe the country to be but I would be embarassed that they had the opportunity to mock the electorial ineptitude of the mighty old USA :lol:

Well yes, we originally backed Castro's takeover of Cuba. Then he suddenly turned face and asked the Soviets for help, and they gladly obliged. Anything to stick it to us, I suppose.

Good post. There are many faults with Cuba, but an outright dismissal because of a failure to give in to the US sphere of influence is a ridiculous path to take. Meggy usually has a lot to say on this matter.

Ummmm. . . first of all AMERICANS are the FIRST to mock our electoral process so if the rest of the world does it, they just need to get in line. Who cares? It is what it is and nobody has created anything better so far. Someday someone will.

Secondly, I would not call the imprisonment, torture and murder of his own citizens "stagnation", nor the theft of their property. Let alone the systematic elimination of ANYONE voicing a differing opinion.

So if you liked Castro, that's okay for you, but don't make a saint of the man. He was a bully, a murderer and a thug who betrayed anyone who helped him out and then got in the way of his little rise to power (if that's what you want to call it).

And if he was so great, why are there more Cubans living in the U.S. in exile than there are in Cuba? They are still partying in Miami just like they will in a few more years when Raul is finished.

And who called him a saint

Plenty of regimes in Central and South America that were as bad or worse but the USA didnt ostracise them, in fact in many cases it helped prop them up !

Many of those Cubans living in Maiami were criminals and Castro emptied the prisons and sent them to USA.
