Did I miss something in the earlier part of the thread? I don't remember anything too flagrant. Then again, I tend to take the perspective that people who can't take a little flak about their core worldview really need to reconsider that position...
For the record, I probably associate more closely with Catholics in my area than other religious sects. They are generally more level-headed than most other sects around here...

Interestingly, according to MSNBC, Catholics represent the largest single group of swing/independent voters in the US. Bit of a side note, but evidence that there is a considerable portion of Catholics in the US who are actually willing to make up their own minds.

The Church is infallible. None of individuals that make it up are (except the Pope when speaking ex Cathedra). So no, I won't defend paedos, be they an imam, a rabbi, a priest, a pastor, a layperson or whatever. But as I've said and I will say again: the stereotyped image of the nasty, grimy, sick, depraved Catholic priest ready to pounce at the first chance to grope an altar boy is a myth, and it is disseminated by socialo-masonic media outlets incrusted in our political systems, especially in France.

Is that really an accurate stat though, or is it just representative of the number of Catholics in the US? What percentage of US voters are Catholic? What's the breakdown of religions in the US? I would think there are more Baptists than Catholics?

I think the religion itself(the basic ideas and teachings) is infallible, that goes for any religion. No one can tell you whether or not to believe a religion or if its wrong because it is all faith. The Church is fallible, because the church is the physical aspect, run by fallible humans. It's the church that defends or covers up the offending priests, it's the church that owns the vatican bank etc...

No, that's ecclesiastical authorities (which are often very corrupt, and I speak from experience), The Church is what is considered gateway to the metaphysical, a far more profound, meaningful entity.

What double standard has been set, though? No-one has forbidden anyone a right to reply, or disagree, or debate the matter sensibly. It is just as much a right to point out the problems with Paedophilia in the Church as it is to point out how Islam, say, has an issue with female oppression. Nappy can spout off enough socio-political-marxist-masonic-neo-facist-blah-blah bollocks if he wants, that's not debate, but what double standard is present?

Religions: Protestant 52%, Roman Catholic 24%, Mormon 2%, Jewish 1%, Muslim 1%, other 10%, none 10% (2002 est.)
excuse my ignorance, but where is baptist?
Various Protestant. I mean, if you count Baptist, then you have to count "Reformed 1932. Latter Day Baptist Church of the Lord" and "First Presbyterian-Lutheran Church of God of America of 1897" and so on, which does put the proddies at a distinctly unfair disadvantage.

Oh yeah...Catho-bashers: watch out, if you keep at this, then we can have a joint memorandum, suggesting a resolution be passed expressing a mild dissaproval of you, issued. Naughty, Naughty..

Well DM, was he in the closet with you? Keep your poor attempts at humor in the flame wars please if this is all you can bring to the conversation. Thanks.

What about your poor attempts at humour? Do they belong in Flame Wars as well? Or do the rules apply to you differently for some reason?
Actual Content: How many cases of Priest Paedophilia have there been recorded worldwide btw?

damn, i was hoping to post a link to Sean Flynn's article, "The Case of the Killer Priest" from the November 06 issue of GQ, but i can't find it online.
i first read it in Best of American Crime Reporting 2007 i'm a huge fan of the series. it goes back to 2002.
so all i can really do is post a link to info on that book:
so there ya go. if you really care, go to your local library, they should have access to GQ somehow. i've told you enough to find it. it gives you at least an idea of the kind of climate the church has fostered for decades.

Very broadly: venial sin is stuff ranging from what you shouldn't do but no-one really cares if you do to stuff that you really shouldn't do but it's not so bad you're damned to eternal damnation). You don't have to confess it.
Mortal sin: Bad, evil, action, and which you weren't co-erced into doing, and you knew full well what you were doing (i.e adultery, murder, drugs fairly astonshingly has been added, not that I'd take some random Bishop's word for it until they make a proper Ex Cathedra declaration which they won't). If you don't confess/feel sorry it for you go to Hell. That is the only circumstance under which God won't forgive you: When you "Blaspheme against the Holy Spirit", or refuse him access your Soul so Jesus' blood can metaphorically "hose it down". You have hence basically said to God you don't want to go to Heaven, and won't.

Ooooooh, now I get it. I always wondered why athiesm is such a one-way ticket to hell. Minor/Not Too Major immoralities are awwwwwwwright, but different beliefs systems are a no-no.
