it tends to get a blown up reputation because California is such a large state (6th largest economy in the world, at one point, if not still)

there are other renowned public universities in the nation, i just don't know of any.

He's from England. They call private schools "public". But, the real truth is that Oxford, Harvard, Berkeley, Stanford, Yale, etc, etc. are all very, very good universities. Which is best for you is more a matter of culture, what individual professors you like, etc.

Also, in particular fields, other schools often out-rank these "toppers". I don't think Berkeley even has a forestry department .. or one in Ichthyology, for example...but ARE fantastastic for "herps" (frogs, salamanders, etc.).

and, without taking away from reminsco's FANTASTIC acheivement, sometimes the big schools are not the best for undergraduates at all. Some of the best research professors absolutely STINK at teaching... and often undergraduate classes are taught by assistants. BUT, you also have access to a lot of free lectures, a general environment that is extremely invigorating. And often professors are accessible, even if they don't actually teach the classes.

and no, I did not attend any of these universities, though family has.

Yes, it really is. Berkeley's more or less on par with the University of Virginia, and quite a bit better than the University of North Carolina. These are probably the 2nd and 3rd best public universities, and they're in medium-sized states.

it's like the Penn State school system. they have a bunch of campuses, but the one in State College is the best in the system.

Except that unlike PA (where I DO live right now, pretty near State College, in fact), CA has several top-ranked universities. UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, for example. And to confuse the issue further, there is the CSU system, which began as teaching colleges, but now offers quite excellent undergraduate and Master's degree programs. A lot depends on your major. (UC Davis is considered to have the best Veterenary program and is very big in Agricultural research, though CSU San Louis Obispo is also well known for agriculture). The UC's tend to be more research-oriented. The CSU system has offered some PhD's, but in general they have "only" bachelor and Master's level programs.

and though I did not attend Berkeley, I have family and friends who did and, more importantly have worked with and for, or had classes from those who did attend there.

So basically I got a full ride to Berkeley and I accepted. I'm still getting over this, because it's the last place I ever expected to go to college. Part of me is really excited and part of me fears for my soul

good for you Amborse. I hope to go to Berkeley when I'm older. Also it is a cool town, I live just north of Berkeley. (Seriously, we branched off from Berkeley back in early 1900's. from my house it's probably about 2 miles to UC Berkeley. ^_^ )
