have you ever seen an idealist with grey hairs on his head? or successful men who keep in touch with unsuccessful friends? you only think you did i could have sworn i saw it too but as it turns out it was just a clever ad for cigarettes.
And anyway this poll doesn't make sense. Since the USA still exists today and many people on these fora are from the US it's obvious they will vote for their mother country.
The answer to this poll is simple: Roman Empire - the impact that the Roman Empire has had on the world (especially the Western World) can still be felt today in so many ways. Even the USA likes to associate itself with Ancient Rome to this day and age.
The British Empire comes in a close second in my book. Even the saying "the sun never sets on the British Empire" can give you an idea of the grandeur of that Empire...and let's not forget the British Empire saved the world during World War II especially in the initial stages of the war where it was fighting alone for 2 years or more. Ironically the British Empire has also contributed to make the USA what it is today.

Lasting forever is not the qualification of current greatest. Outlasting others might be a good start, but still not everything.
I don't disagree with you about it. All I am saying is that just because English is the universal language now doesn't make USA the greatest country that ever existed.

Still it was pretty impressive the way those Americans invented it right..
I voted France so it would have one vote.. shocked to see someone had already voted it
The nation-state is merely an arbitrary concept in order to divide humanity into 'us' and 'them', it benefited the ruling class because it gave them an excuse to force people into line. They merely had to point to all the other groups and say "Look at those, if you don't follow our commands they will come here and kill and rape us all, but if you follow us we can be the ones to conquer them".
Discuss.

There is certainly some truth to that. However, there are many practicalities such as building roads, maintaining general order and so forth that require government of one form or another.

Sure, but they could (theoretically, at least) be dealt with perfectly well with a decent ecumenopolis.
Incidentally, The Roman Empire was an empire, not a country. Hence the name . Same for other "empires". The Soviet Union was a Union, not a country, hence the name. Ancient Greece was not a single country. Colonial Britain was four countries, even if we forget the colonies.
For most of the world, the obsession with "nationhood" is relatively recent. (18th century on).
'America' is two entire continents. Your post is meaningless.
Also, I think the OP meant 'great' as in 'illustrious' and 'renowned', not 'fat'. Although if he did mean fat, then i have to vote USA too.
Honestly, did you forget the North American/South American Union that Bush is so obviously doing without letting anyone else, including the Brazilians and Mexicans know? Geez.
... television ... the airplane ... man on the moon ... the light bulb ... air conditioning ... the Internet ... the automobile ... the personal computer ... (probably other big ones)
... The USA. (though I've serious doubts about our ability to continue this trend)

Fear the Amero...
It's definitely not just the product of made-up rumours and wild, baseless conjecture. It's a completely real thing that is certainly going to really happen. In real life. For real. Absolutely.
