Full Orchestra [idea]

Post by Vroke91939 »

This is my first post on these forums.

I would like to preface this idea by saying that I have zero photoshop skills, nor do I have access to photoshop itself. If this turns out to be a good idea, I can help work out kinks in the gameplay, but someone else will have to create the actual map (both visually and code it).

So, here's the idea - Full Orchestra

It's a map based on the seating in a full orchestra. The bonuses could be each 'section' (flutes, trumpets, violins, etc.) as well as certain other bonuses (bonus for holding the conductor, holding all principal string chairs, etc.)

It would be laid out in a half circle, like a regular orchestra.

If this is a good idea, I can make up a quick sketch for anyone who can't visualize what I'm saying.

Thanks for reading.

You know, that's not a bad idea. The only problem is that visually it might look like the US Senate...

I was thinking the same thing at first, but it might be possible to make it different. I'd need to see a sketch, though.

How about adding some audience in three set of rows and three sections with aisles?

That's exactly what I mean.

An audience wouldn't be a bad idea either. It could be in a concert hall.

Do you mind if I make it, then?

Vroke, you got saved by InkL0sed's willingness to start a new project (his Indian Subcontinent is awaiting some C.A. attention, so he's likely a bit bored map-wise). For future reference, post any ideas in the announcement topic at the top of this forum. If you've got an image/working map to show, start a new topic. Without an image, people normally get a slew of "I'd comment, but I need to see something first" posts.

The idea can go somewhere. I would say rip off a famous concert hall (Carnegie, e.g.), have an audience, and have a bonus for section leaders (especially the first violin, think Italy's Citta bonus).

the audience won't help it much. in fact it will help it become even more like us senate because it will give it a more rectangular shape.

Alright, here's a "sketch" version I've come up with really quickly:

If each audience seat is a seperate territory and if we divide each orchestral section correctly, we should be able to get the map to look and play different that the US Senate.

I was thinking there could be aisle territories that would border the edge seats of every section, and then two aisles could lead up to steps on the stage.

And maybe the conductor could one-way attack the aisles... I don't know, just brainstorming here.

Why, not put "critics" in the aduience. Like if you hold two critics you get 1 army and if you hold 4 you get 3 armies and so on and on.

That's a good idea. It'll remove the 'box-ness' from the map.

As for the sections, I think we should use the following sections (using traditional instrumentation):

Flutes: 3 (Piccolo, Flute I, Flute II)
Double Reeds: 6 (Oboe I, Oboe II, English Horn, Bassoon I, Bassoon II, Double Bassoon)
Clarinets: 3-5 (Clarinet I, Clarinet II, Bass Clarinet)
French Horns: 4-6 (Horn I, Horn II, Horn III, Horn IV)
Trumpets: 3-5 (Trumpet I, Trumpet II, Trumpet III)
Trombones: 3 (Trombone I, Trombone II, Bass Trombone)
Tuba: 2 (Both on Tuba I)
Violin I: 5-8 (All on Violin I)
Violin II: 5-8 (All on Violin II)
Violas: 4-7 (Viola I)
Cellos: 4-7 (Cello I)
Double Basses: 3-6 (All on Bass I)
Percussion is where it starts to get iffy, because so many different instruments are needed for different pieces. However, we should include 4-5 territories in that section.

be careful that it plays well and is not just a gimmick map... non-geographical maps tend to be less popular than the rest, and you don't want to devote your time to something nobody will play (speaking from experience).

I don't like the critics idea... it seems unnecessarily gimmicky.

I was thinking for the seats, you could get a +1 bonus for every row. This would seem strange with 5 territories in a row and 2 borders (assuming you can only attack horizontally), but once you start getting more than one row, you start getting a lot of bonus for not a lot of border.

And maybe there could be a path leading off somewhere to the side, saying "This way to backstage" -- and then there could be a side entrance on the stage saying the same thing. Another border between the stage and the audience.

I think this map could work well if it's geared for a 1v1 like Arms Race.

For Percussion, I would suggest "Timpani", "Bass Drum", "Snare Drum", "Cymbals", and "Keyboards". I speak as a percussionist myself, and that is as generic as you can reduce percussion.

I'll keep that in mind. Instruments is really the last thing I need to get an update.

Well, even a piano is percussion, since it uses hammers to strike strings as well.

Instead of using the troop number shadows you can just put the numbers on top of little pictures of the instruments. At the least it will LOOK different from the Senate map.
