Quick Hits Size: 30 participants plus 5 reserves Total Games: 82 regular season, up to 28 playoff games Games going on at once: Likely 8-10 during the regular season and 7 during the playoffs Season and playoff format: Standard NHL Premium required
General Setup
I want to set up and run an NHL League tournament. To sign up please choose your favorite team (or just a random one if your favorite is already taken) and your "home ice" settings. All games will be Standard, Sequential and Sunny, and your home ice settings will fill in the rest (map, cards and forts)
You will play through an entire NHL season (yes that means 82 games). I will be using the format for the upcoming NHL season meaning you play divisional rivals 6 times each for a total of 24 games, conference opponents 4 times each for a total of 40 games, opposite conference opponents once each for a total of 15 games. That leaves 3 games which will be against random opponents from the opposite conference. You will have 41 home games and 41 away games.
I don't want this to take an entire seasons length (like 8 months) to complete so the games will be done in stages, likely you will be playing between 8 and 10 games at once (hence the premium requirement), I'll try and split these evenly between home and away so that you don't have a big batch where you don't play your map and settings.
To warn ahead, I will be playing in this tournament as a regular member (not as a reserve). If for some reason that is an issue for you, sorry find another tournament.
Scoring
Scoring will be done the same way as in the NHL (2 points for win, 1 point for OT/SO loss, 0 for regulation loss). All end of season tiebreakers and playoff seeding will be done in the exact same way as the NHL. Playoffs will consist of 7 games played simultaneously. You must win 4 of these to advance in to the next round. There are no shootouts in the playoffs.
Overtime and shootouts will go as follows: - All games which are won in 12 rounds or under are 'in regulation' (this number is adjustable so tell me if you think it's too high or too low). Eliminate your opponent to win. - All games which go beyond 12 rounds enter overtime. Still standard rule of eliminate your opponent to win applies. - All games which go beyond 16 rounds enter a shootout. Shootouts are decided on a formula. Currently I have the formula in mind as. Score = (Total Armies/2) + (sqrt(Territories)) + (territories conquered). You'll still want to finish the game obviously (to get CC rank) but in terms of league scoring it will effectively end at the conclusion of round 16.
I will keep track of the standings and keep them updated in this thread. I also may grab a stupid free website and throw some stuff on there for kicks.

Speaking as someone who has been involved in numerous hockey-based tournaments here, I would recommend that you bump your round number down from 12 to 10 for overtime. That's just me though, 12 will probably work just fine.
Good luck with it, the hockey themed tournaments are always very popular around here for some reason. I wish I had the time to join, but perhaps next time.

I was thinking of 10 as well when I made it. Currently I'm thinking of dropping OT to round 10 and SO to round 15. Does anyone else have any thoughts?
And likely if this goes well I'll look at having future seasons so there should be plenty of room to join in later.
Also I was thinking of throwing in an all-star game for kicks. My thought is to have the leaders from the divisions play an all-star setup midway through the season. best of 3 triples games, 3 division leaders from the east on one team, 3 from the west on the other team. East team chooses one game settings, West team choose another game settings, and league vote chooses the third game settings.
Anyway this would have no actual bearing on the league and just be for entertainment. Let me know what you think
It might not be a bad idea to do 9 rounds for regulation(3 times 3 - 3 periods in regulation) and then do another 3 rounds for OT. The shootout is basicly a startover, to win, you need to score more goals in 3 or more chances than your opponent. Basing that fact on how the game has gone up to that point may not be fair.
I'd say you start another game on a small board(say doodle earth) with setting you choose, and the most enemy territories(neutrals shouldn't count) taken in 3 round, wins the shootout. If tied at the ned of 3 rounds you just go on the next round, most territories taken that round wins, it'd be sudden death.

Hrm, that's a good idea for a shootout. What do others think like a 3 round, most enemy terits taken wins battle?
