Since more-or-less everything about humanity should have been known after a good 20 minutes, what point, exactly, did the other 60 odd years serve?

Since the aliens decided to stick around (presumably because they liked probing rednecks) why did they have to do it so damn badly? You'd think a presumably million year old civilization would be able to build ships that can last a pathetic 60 years without spontaneously combusting, but no, this is a Star Trek-esque universe and the control panels are packed with C4.
