From what I've seen (which amounts to not a lot) it seemed to have continuous series of circular punches and which made for lightning quick hand attacks. The guy that I knew looked like he had more in common with a Wing Chun Kung Fu stylist than a Muay Thai or American Kickboxer. I'm probably wrong like I said it's just from my observation of one guy.

Chinese Kenpo was derived from the Chinese peasants during the Chinese/Japanese war, for the most part. The Chinese were impressed into the army, but were not given weapons or armor.

Kenpo is basically the quickest way to incapacitate an attacker with the least amount of movement on the part of the defender. We learn many eye gouges, throat and knee strikes, groin shots. Basically a nice variety so that no matter what armor the attacker was wearing, there was a move to hit an un-armored section.

The weapons styles were based on items that farmers would have in the fields, so mostly escrima, kamas, and bo staffs.

Of course, I am interested in samurai too, as most martial arts students are, so Kendo was the most perfect fit for me. I have been number one in my state a few times but never passed regionals.

Wow that's impressive. Grandmaster Ip Chun, is he a descendant or relative of Yip Man? (I'm guessing that the Y could be a transliteration thing.)
Yes. He is Yip Man's son. I'm not sure why his sons (Ip Chun & Ip Ching) don't use the Y. My best guess is that it's down to some dialectic difference between Hong Kong and the mainland (Yip Man emigrated from Fatshan in Guangdong province to Hong Kong in the late 1940s when his sons were children). Ip Chun used to come to the UK quite often to do seminars for his students, Sam Kwok & Shaun Rawcliffe, but stopped coming after 2001 because it's a very long flight for an old man. Now if we want the benefit of his teaching we have to fly out to Hong Kong, although Ip Ching still comes over here occasionally.

Yup, that sounds like Wing Chun to me.

Just so you know, the Grand Master for our system is Eizo Shimabuku. I have never met him in person but my sensei has and has nothing but the upmost respect for him as both a martial artist and a person.

You're over there near Francis Fong aren't you? That guy could beat an attacker up in a phone booth and not scrape an elbow.

I think we're fairly close to his school. It's in Norcross right? I met him once with a couple of other people from my dojo a few years back.

I think he moved closer into Atlanta. He and my Aikido Instructor are good friends, so we went down to visit every now and again.

Try that after performing the old dizzy-izzy with a baseball bat. See how long you can fight each other, let alone stand up straight without falling down.

Honestly though, I don't like going through the discipline of learning how to get in the correct stance and throw a proper blow. Free sparring is more fun. It's a major fault of mine and I should get involved in some organized instruction.

I think I'd rather fight you and lose than attempt to pronounce that.

I'm a martial artist, but I no longer participate in tournaments. I'm mostly just an emcmonkey now.

Martial arts tournaments? In twenty seven years as a martial artist, I've never participated in one. I did have a student that was interested in them, and he ended up taking second place in our state in the WTF (My school wasn't a member, which I think speaks well for both my student and that federation).

I don't have a clue what an emcmonkey is though. You lost me there. :?

You should never abreviate WTF on the internet.... it means something else too.

I've done a few Tournaments here in Wyoming, and most of the people there are International Tae Kwon Do Federation AND World Tae Kwon Do Federation. With some Kempo people, and people from my school, and it's branch in Cheyenne.

Tae Kwon Do is a sport... Not a martial art.

Depends on the Federation or style of it. I forget which one, but one of them is a "sport," but they only know pretty kicks. :?

Taekwon-Do is a martial art, but not what's in the Olympics. That is a sport.

A black belt in Tae Kwon Do can kick me in my head in a tournament...

Now let's see him do that in a street fight...

My sensei taught us VERY little respect for that branch of the arts, because none of them can really fight without the aid of another art or form... Learning katas all day and stretching does little for oneself beyond mental strength

Done alot of boxing in my youth and in the army and also done no holds barred fighting (no foreign objects), i picked up some methods of self defence from the kung fu guys who were performing at where i work (they're only 'bout 5'6-5'7 but would kick my ass any day in a free for all) Not sure if they could win at a game of boxing in my prime though.

But yeah no big achievements in the martial arts spectrum apart from being boxing champion in the army for a while (in my prime) (kind of like the olympics we created every year to keep us fit and busy). Though it was cancelled a few times if we were on a tour of duty

My friends also used to go to formal training, until the school got too heavy into the spiritual aspects like the levitation and mind-reading stuff.

Me, I just read old Army manuals. And take formal training when I can pay for it.
