Quick question.

Postby wcaclimbing on Sun Aug 10, 2008 3:50 pm

I would like to be able to use Terragen [clicky] to create the background of what will eventually be the map key for my new map. Just a small image, like the sand dunes behind the Oasis title.
Only problem is, I don't know if I am allowed to use it to make a map for this site.

These are the parts of the license agreement that looks like it explains it for me, but its all confusing for me and I don't want to miss something important.

It might just depend on if mapmaking is defined as "commercial use". I'm not sure.

license agreement wrote:LICENSE. Vendor grants to you a non-exclusive right to use this software program (hereinafter the "Software") during the term of the pre release evaluation period in accordance with the terms contained in this license. You agree to allow this Software to store small amounts of information necessary to protect the Software against unauthorized use, and you acknowledge that Vendor will not disclose any information related to removing or overcoming such anti-piracy information stored in your system at any time.

TERM - NON-COMMERCIAL USE. If you use the Software personally and not for a business or commercially, this License commences upon the installation of the software and is effective until terminated by Vendor. Vendor may terminate this License for any reason or for no reason. Vendor may have included code in the Software that will cause the software to terminate automatically after a certain date or after a certain number of uses. Such termination may occur without notice to you. Upon termination you shall remove the Software from your computer(s).

TERM - COMMERCIAL USE. If you are a business entity, educational institution, government entity or you use this Software in a business or other than personally, this License commences upon the installation of the software and is effective for 30 days following the date you install the Software. This License terminates automatically without notice from Vendor upon the expiration of the 30 day evaluation term or if you fail to comply with any provision of this License. Upon termination you shall remove the Software from your computer(s).

TERM - COMMERCIAL REGISTRATION. If you are a business entity, educational institution, government entity or you use this Software in a business or other than personally and wish to use it beyond the 30 day evaluation period, you must register the Software with Vendor and pay the registration fee to Vendor. Each approved registration results in one "Registered Copy" of the Software but any number of copies may be registered with Vendor for a fee that is decided by Vendor.

Can anyone make sense of that and figure out if I'm allowed to use Terragen for part of my map?
I usually don't read these things...

I would imagine that your use of the software is personal, (ie YOU won't make any money from it). I wouldn't infer anything about any restrictions on any graphics you produce... it sounds to me like they are happy for individuals (non-profit) to have an indefinite evaluation license, but they want commercial users to only have it for 30 days before stumping up some cash for the full product...

but they might see it as CC indirectly somehow making a bit more profit, which could mark it as commercial?

I don't know the rules on all this stuff.

i say go for it, and if they do have a fit, just save the files in a format so that you can easily transfer it to another program?

I think the safe thing to do would be to drop a line to the software producers telling them of your intention and see what they say.

Let them know the final image will be done in photoshop and you only intend to use their software for a small part of your project,
What do you know about map making, bitch?

Yes you can use it. I also used terragen for some of my background. What you need to be carefull of is where you get the DEM that you put into terragen and the licensing that goes with that.
