We must acknowledge seriously that a large part of the impatience is based on the inaccessibility of the existing Temp map. It is a constant call to arms!

I really have given it a shot but it is practically unfathomable. You can not take a gestalt mental snapshot of it to aid routes; you have to trace and retrace the joining bars each time. And this with the nagging confusion that it represents something very familiar.

I am sure they will address this very shortly. At least we just need to turn the joining lines into touching landmasses... they do not have to be world-shaped, just filled-out, so the brain can operate at a more instinctive level.

If they do that and swap the Temp for a better Temp map, it allows time for the ultimate map to proceed with greater surety and under slightly less pressure.

Fropper said to me the other day (in jest i may add) that the incredible complexity that the simple visual change impressed upon the Classic, would lead to it being the new noob-Farmer map. Obviously the concept of a world map in combination with the gameplay is not an issue - after all, the World 2.1 and DoodleEarth maps are still up and running.

So the issue has to be with any perceived similarities between the previous classic map and any map Hasbro may be using. That comes down to the way territories are divided up, and what they're named (frankly, I have an issue with that last one, because I still believe you can't claim copyright on common items like placenames, common nouns, colours, etc - it's a basic tenet of copyright law).

Indeed, when I look around at all the other risk-clones, I wonder how even THAT could be an issue. In order for Hasbro to support a copyright claim, they need to rigorously defend it against ALL perceived breaches.

Nevertheless, if my assumption is correct, then let's look at some ways forward.

I think we need to maintain the number of overall territories (or at least be very close to it), and some of the strategic connections between them (those have become integral to the overall strategic appeal of the classic game). Divisions can therefore be changed, but as minimally as possible. For example, I like the idea of combining Australia into one territory and separating out New Zealand.

Some names can be changed to appease the Gods that need things to be sufficiently different, but not all of them need to be - for the reason I mentioned above. So things like 'Central America' => 'Mexico', 'Siam' => 'Thailand', 'Middle East' => 'Arabia' etc would be reasonable. But I don't think people want to lose names like 'Kamchatka', or 'Northwest Territories', and there's no need to drop recognised placenames like 'Alaska', 'Japan' or 'New Guinea'. They exist, so there can be no claim on them.

if we use map C) in the OP, ie. have the board cut through at a different location, and tweak the internal 'zone' or is that 'region' boundaries, and change the name to EARTH or WORLD MAP or something and hurry up about it please, afterwards worry about how it actually looks.

i mean, take on Doodle Earth style for all I care. just let's get rid of the freaking symbols and battleship-like names before Parker Bros goes at us for Battleship infringement.

I refuse to play anymore classic maps until this is resolve, and my sponsor time ends next month not looking to be renewed.

it should only take days, rather than months, to fix this debacle.

The site has decided that the Classic map has to come down... Lack appears to have decided that we're not going to be able to use a world map with the classic gameplay.

Please be patient, while we get our heads around what we're going to do next...

Now as we are not going to have a classic map .. and i am almost certain you have decided to do this in another way as you are panicking.
('for the sake of speed, a crack group of the best cartographers will be making 3 map choices which will be unveiled to the broader community to make their choice.. bla etc".... not the wisest option in my opinion!)

I am slowly coming to terms with the loss of this great and, my favourite, map!

I strongly advise that you do not make the map quickly behind closed doors (frankly we feel alienated and left out enough already and we need the best chance to have the greatest replacement map possible)

I, at least, have come to terms, somewhat, with the loss of the map.

what I believe you should do is:

1. make a less grating temporary map
2. Run the best damn map Competition and bring back your punters together feeling like part of the site.

Be quick but don't rush it.

Give the ultimate replacement the best possible chance at being magnificent and to the taste of the largest number of customers possible.


Trust our judgement and we will trust the site.

I still think that we could do the competition, if only to see who can make themost original and best map with the same gameplay, whatever that gameplay will be.

nah they are going to panic Juan... i can feel our fate is already chosen for us once more.... that's the other part they are missing in this! A competition at least gives us the feeling that we are not helpless passengers, our destinies mapped out for us by Hasbro and now CC.

A competition would not bring 1,000 vying interests into the foundry, it would simply let them vote on more and more varied choices.. Do it much like the Brazil Revamp (except your lawyer has the veto instead of Marv), what a fantastic (except from the end) display of talent that was!

If you do not hold a competition and give the perception of involvement and choice you will always have dissenters.
If you do hold a competition, the community will self police public opinion for you with far more vehemence.

Why was Classic so popular? Because it has simple gameplay and we are familiar with its image but also as it part of many of our pasts. (heh i am not a Hasbro spy)
If you replace it with another map which is entirely of anothers creation, without making it part of our psyches it can not hope to replace it in popularity.

the only way to do that is if we have a real part in its formation. If we feel we shaped its evolution!

Do we need Lacks permission to have a contest though? I've learned recently that it's the mapmakers that have the real control on this site, though thank goodness that they don't know that. Just make the only rules that the gamplay needs to be similer(if not identical) but the map has to be wildly original.

Yes. I was of the mind that a contest would take waaaayyy to much time(I'm following the Brazil map same as er'yone else) and that they should just pay someone to quickly make a better temp map. In that way the mapmakers would have time to do their contest. But If the classic map is a total loss, and Lack isn't communicating(not necessaraly his fault) then why not just start a competition now? It will please everyone to see some results as we are now entering day three. Even if they are unofficial results.... so Mr. Benn, go and grab that bull by the horns!

Suffice it to say that MrBenn and I are sharing with you what little we learn, as we learn it. We agree with the rest of the community that something better than LuckyCharmsClassic and Skittles-Earth is needed, but until we know exactly how we can go forward everything we say about a Classic competition is hopeful conjecture. I'm confident that things will be made more concrete in the near future, but until then we're stuck with what we've got... A2 assaults A3.
