Does life have a point?

Post by Juan_Bottom »

Even including the religious aspect (which if you are of faith then, IMO prolly proves that life has no point to you) I don't think life has a purpose. I think that life is an anomoly, special or not, but one without purpose.

I think that's just a matter of faith and opinion. Either way, enjoy it while you have it.

Life is a test (secular or religious, but more religious aspect), and your choices will send you upon a certain path.

If there's a God, the point is whatever God says it is.
If there's not, the point of life is whatever YOU say it is.
This gives me a distinct advantage over religios.
Life is good, and so am I.

Excluding God, one major purpose is to reproduce inorder that you take part in the progress of humanities existence. ;)

"Were you to live three thousand years, or even thirty thousand, remember that the sole life which a man can lose is that which he is living at the moment; and furthermore, that he can have no other life except the one he loses. This means that the longest life and the shortest amount to the same thing. For the passing minute is every man's equal possession, but what has once gone by is not ours. Our loss, therefore, is limited to that one fleeting instant, since no one can lose what is already past, nor yet what is still to come -- for how can he be deprived of what he does not possess? So two things should be borne in mind. First, that all the cycles of creation since the beginning of time exhibit the same recurring pattern, so that it can make no difference whether you watch the identical spectacle for a hundred years, or for two hundred, or forever. Secondly, that when the longest -- and shortest -- lived of us come to die, their loss is precisely equal. For the sole thing of which any man can be deprived is the present; since this is all he owns, and nobody can lose what is not his."

-Marcus Aurelius. Book II, Verse 14.

"Someone will say, 'I did not ask to be born.' This is a naive way of throwing greater emphasis on our facticity. I am responsible for everything, in fact, except for my very responsibility, for I am not the foundation of my being. Therefore everything takes place as if I were compelled to be responsible. I am abandoned in the world, not in the sense that I might remain abandoned and passive in a hostile universe like a board floating on the water, but rather in the sense that I find myself suddenly alone and without help, engaged in a world for which I can bear the whole responsibility without being able, whatever I do, to tear myself away from this responsibility for an instant. For I am responsible for my very desire of fleeing responsibilities."

"Life has no meaning a priori. Before you come alive, life is nothing; it's up to you to give it a meaning, and value is nothing else but the meaning that you choose. In that way, you see, there is a possibility of creating a human community."

That's kind of the point, bro.

The most important aspect to life having a point is not fearing death. Until you no longer fear death, you can not truly live.

Okay, that's it. It's final. I have a homework assignment for you. I'm going to get you a copy of The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius. If you dig on that, I'll send you some Epicurus. You have to understand the complexity of the stoic philosophy to understand that dichotomy. Although, I far prefer Aurelius to Epicurus, because where Epicurus is a pure stoic (and worth reading for the background), Aurelius is something of a mix between a cynic and a stoic, which is where I think I am.

And why I can have no fun in almost dying yet carry on living without worrying about sleeping the big sleep that awaits us all.

Isn't it kind of vain to imagine that we could actually know life's purpose?

Sure, Bible-Thumpers and Philosophers can unite in a frenzy of self-congratulatory dick-beating while claiming that their old books are superior to everybody elses old books... but ultimately, nobody knows. Anybody who claims to be able to make sweeping statements about what life is all about (or what the controller of life is all about) is just fooling themselves, and acting like a gigantically pretentious prick.

Well, to add to the quote tree:
"I intend to live forever, or die trying."
-Groucho Marx

But seriously, why does life need a purpose? I'd like to think that I'm content devising my own lot in life, and will be satisfied with whatever I have achieved upon death.
Of course, that doesn't mean I don't have goals...

That is both what InkL0sed and myself (in quoting Sartre) were saying.

Relax DM, it was a joke. You really need to take a deep breathe when you read my posts. You always seem to overreact.

Really, when you say "play straight into DM's hands" you are actually showing everyone your cards. You take all of this as some sort of competition. It isn't a competition DM. Leave that in Flame Wars.

Really, just relax and try to have some fun. There's no need to get defensive when someone replies to your post with a joke.
