America without the rails would not have moved west. with the advance on with the rails west goods could be transported to the major cities that needed the goods and also the ocean. Without it people only had wagons it cost alot more travled slower and was basical not worrth the cost. so the rails had everthing to do with us moving west. However i think with out the rails california would still be settled cause of the coast. any thing in particual you want to know? or does that answer it jones. the fact of the matter is in europe Rails are used now and in amercia Amtrack is struggling to survie. The railroads settled this contry but the automobals rullued it.

I had to write a long essay on this one. Fisher(?) was the big man at the time, and was saying railroads were the key. I approached it from a different angel, and asked, if there weren't railroads, there had to have been a reason why they didn't develope - and pursued what would have happened if for example the steam engine hadn't been invented, or there wasn't enough trees for the sleepers, enough iron for the rails, etc.
