I see a lot of cooks out there positively bristling with medals. What on earth is someone with all that bronze silver and gold on their lapels doing peeling my spuds I ask?
I mean, doesn't demotion bring with it an inevitable dressing down and sabre snapping etc.?

Being a cook does not always mean you are a bad player. Sometimes people go down because they like to play new maps or just have a bad struck of luck.
Besides, some medals, such as ratings or making a map/running a tournament have nothing to do with winning games at all.
Havatcha, your rank is designed to show your skill (it goes more in depth by what maps you are playing effects what your rank is as well) not what medals you have.
Besides medals aren't award in a real life system by what your rank is either, highest honor in Australian war medals is the Victorian Cross, in a World War situation or something a your encampment gets over run by the enemy and your going to be killed or captured. Yet a brave young private takes lead of troops because all the higher ranks where killed and drives off the enemy troops and saves lives. Should he not be awarded a medal because his rank is low?

I guess you're right, but I also don't think he'd stay a private very long. All I'm saying is that if it's possible to lose rank shouldn't it be possible also to lose medals. Perhaps the reason for losing medals should not be associated to the reasons for losing rank (losing points, poor play, etc.) but nevertheless it could serve as an encouragement to those highly decorated members to maintain their high standards.
Another point to make is some medals are almost impossible to get on high points (like terminator where you are the main target if you are high points) and other medals like the assassin are faster to get on low points cos' you can play things like assdoodle games.
Not all are bothered by medals and many are not chasing them at all. These chaps are after rank, or win ratio. Others want as much bling on their profile as possible.
I would think medals do suggest ability, however if the chap is a consistant cook but has tons of gold medals (are there lot's of these???) he is probably still not a good player.

Anyway, set your own goals early and then work towards those goals. I always pushed to make lieutenant by 40, captain by 60 and major by 80. Did that and it was hugely enjoyable trying to achieve it.
Now I am vaguely after maintaining as high as score as possible (for me) from standard/seq. games, as well as slowly building up my skills on team games.

Thanks Mr Changsha, I think you said some pretty wise stuff here. (When you say 'lieutenant by 40' I presume you mean 40 games completed.) I guess I pretty much share your ideal, what's important to me is rank and win ratio. Any medals aquired on the way is just incidental.
