conquerbook - FIRST DRAFT POSTED

Post by icehack »

UPDATE April 10:
Here's my first attempt to get the visuals right. I still haven't decided on territ count, but i did some test runs and 24 fits comfortably on the big map (825px wide). I stuck my icons on there too, just to show them off. They're 26px wide so troop counters will fit on them. I'm not entirely happy with the quality of the image so far, but it's just a first attempt to show what I was getting at. Input is welcome, of course.

I'm sure most of us have seen this image before from the facebook login page. Looking at it today, I couldn't help but wonder how a game would play out on that map. There's 13 territories and no clear bonuses that I can see. Perhaps every 2 territories equals a +1. Or bonuses for owning all male or female spaces. (You can tell m/f by the outline of the hair. Maybe they would need to be re-colored as pink and blue to make it more obvious.) To name the territs I would just use M1, M2, F1, F2 etc. Any other suggestions? Using the names of countries works as well but wouldn't fit on the map as easily. I just screenshotted the page for now, I'll try some fancier stuff when I get home from work tonight and post it either tonight or tomorrow.
What does everyone think?[/spoiler]

Well, you have 13 terriories. No bonuses … you gotta work on that, besides the copyright.

The tight fit was kind of the appeal of it for me, depends what you like of course. Doodle Earth works with 18 territories.

Besides, it's just an idea right now. I wouldn't be crushed if it never happened.

Can you think of a way to bring it up to 16 territories? Then, in 8-way games, each person would start with 2. Any smaller than that seems below the lower limit of what would make an enjoyable map.

Yeah, one more could easily fit in each of Africa, Asia, and North America.
Like I said, I'll play around with it tonight/tomorrow.

Don't focus on Doodle earth.
Doodle earth is something special and unique. :)

Anyway, copyright are a real problem.

I wouldn't say I'm focusing on Doodle Earth, but more on small maps.

I believe I have a way to get around the copyright issues, but I need to get to my home computer first so I can work on it a bit.

Maybe "Friend Book" and you add cool names for people like "Australian Friend" and INCREASE THE TERRITS or it can not go on

This was actually my exact plan, right down to the name Conquerbook, haha.
I still haven't had a chance to work on any visuals, but I'm cooking some ideas up in my head. I'll be building an image inspired by the one posted above from scratch so as to not break copyright law. Still not sure on the territ count, it will be 16 at the very least, maybe 24 at the most. I'm hoping to keep the feel of the paths from that original image, that is, they won't be dictated by geography. I think a +1 bonus for every 2 friends sounds reasonable.
I'm open to any input as this is my first map.

Yeah, you may want to add a +__ bonus for all males and +__ for all females but you really need to make it something more than a regular map, maybe you have to connect with 5 different friends or something lol, like there is a separate "board" where all the players have "bases" like in the St. Patricks Day map and they have to attack down and "connect with 5 different friends" or something like that. :)

I like the "Hold 5 friends to win" idea :D

Me too! But if you're playing with 4 players and there are 24 territs total, everyone starts with 5 anyway. It would have to be at least 7 to win, I think.

Do we get bonuses for being friends with important people? Or lose points for having shady or completely uncool characters on our friendlist?

I like that, but how to determine if one friend is more important than another? Perhaps if certain friends have more friends (borders) than others, they are worth more? A friend with only one border/friend could be a -1, while one with 5 borders/friends could be a +3, for a rough example.
I like where this is going.

That was the original plan, but it becomes unnecessary if the goal of the game was to hold x amount of friends.

If you want to make the goal hold X friends then I think you need to have each person start with only one country.

Otherwise in a 3 player game each person will start with the objective OR the objective will be too hard to achieve in an 8 player game.

That being said, I think an objective of "capture any X territories" sounds very boring. It would be like playing on St. Patricks Day but instead of going for the center you just need to capture 5 total territories? I don't think that would be as much fun.

Now if the make each of the friends have different characteristics and tie that into gameplay I think you have a much more interesting idea. Try to find some list of personality traits and make each friend represent a trait or characteristic. Then give that friend a corresponding role on the map.

ie- the gregarious friend will have more borders than anyone else
the loner will have few borders or one way borders
the generous one gives you a bonus
the selfish one gives a negative bonus
etc

Better than i was here first time :) , i think you could find the right way.
I think you have to discost you on the idea of facebook.
I think you have to unify your first idea with these suggestions...

The example done is very interesting... ;)

I think you have to work about the number of regions...you can set it up to 32, and you could find the space required easily removing the small white dots...
You're doing a world map, some little islands don't fit very well and could be useless. in this way you have a lot of empty space.
you could remove the small islands on the right side of your map, then scale the map to cover the unused space.

E.g.:

About title i like to see something that remind me about CC and Facebook in the same time...

Quick update, here's a background image that I'm happy with. I followed TNBDS's advice about the small islands and the logo.

If anyone has any suggestion for a slogan along the lines of "_______ helps you connect and share with the people in your life", I'd love to hear it. :D

i have highlighted the part you still are infringing on
this means that even a slight change to or a revamp of any of there images is not allowed

so i suggest that you just have a bunch of people standing in cliques and such and connect them if you get my drift
