I don't call myself a Christian because of my consistent choice to follow my own lead, but my owning a gun has nothing to do with whether or not i'm a disciple of Jesus - i was for 14 years and i owned guns then as i do now.
I answered your question and gave you the references in the Bible to show you that Jesus indeed advocated owning weapons. As there is no record of He or His disciples ever using them (aside from Peter in the Garden of Gesthemane), i can't be certain as to why He said it was ok to carry one. I carry a knife always, and i carry a gun when i go into the city. I've never killed anyone as a civilian, and would not unless my life was threatened. I have had to pull it out a few times to discourage such, and if i'd been unarmed i wouldn't be here now.
I listen to you guys with somewhat of a bemused attitude on this, as it's pretty obvious that you've led sheltered lives as far as violence is concerned. I haven't, and this shit is not hypothetical to me. If others have guns - and that definitely includes officials - then i'm at their mercy if i go unarmed.

Not ignoring, Mr B - looking for my Bible (I've looked at it more in the past year, debating in these fora, than I have in decades - this is fun).
Hmm. He does tell the disciples to get a sword, doesn't he? But almost immediately he tells them not to use them. Not sure why - possibly it is something to do with fulfilling prophecy - did you have to have a sword to be counted an outlaw in that time and place?
"if he has no sword, let him sell his cloak to buy one. For Scripture says, "And he was counted among the outlaws", and these words I tell you must find fulfillment in me."
From time to time he does do things, it seems, purely to fit previous prophecies.
Does he encourage violence anywhere?
Incidentally, I grew up in a pretty rough town , though people didn't carry guns - they are illegal and used to be difficult to obtain. I don't know how prevalent guns are there now, but I would hate to live there if they're common. (Actually I'd hate to live there anyhow)
For me, carrying a gun would be a mistake. In a fight, I'm usually on my way to ground from being hit and still saying "can't we all just get along?"
I'm sure I'd be useless in a firefight (though I am, or used to be, a good shot).
