Oh, i thought we were talking about horror films - you must mean slasher films. A good horror film doesn't have to rely on the R rated gratuitous violence to scare people of intelligence, but the mouth breathers go for the gore. Imagine that. Here's a list of "worst fucking thing ever" movies for our distinguished critic:SultanOfSurreal wrote:pg-13 horror is pretty much the worst fucking thing evermaasman wrote:I thoroughly enjoyed the grudge 1 and 2 along with the ring, those 3 are probably my favorite of the more recent films. no i fully agree with you, things like the saw series and "WRONG TURN" and "JEEPERS CREEPERS" and all that other bullshit are disgusting tripe that aims for the lowest common denominator, and further their insane violence is a sad commentary on american societyb.k. barunt wrote:Oh, i thought we were talking about horror films - you must mean slasher films. Psycho
Vertigo
The Birds
Burnt Offerings
Dracula (the original with Bela Lugosi)
The guys who mad these movies understood how to scare people without dumping buckets of blood and viscera over the audience. Something of a lost art.

I will agree with you, as far as the sequels are concerned. The first Saw movie was much more than just gore, and shock value.SultanOfSurreal wrote:things like the saw series

I, too, love all of the Hellraiser series, and think '28 Weeks Later' stands at the top of zombies movies of all time. Hellraiser is being remade, in case you didn't know, the guy who played Rorschach in Watchmen is playing him, so it has some hope.HungrySomali wrote:Hellraiser 1 & 2 were my favorite "horror" movies. They were like horror operas. Very elegant butchery. But by far the scariest movie I ever saw was 28 Days Later. Still one of my top 5 movies of all time of any genre. Scary and cool at the same time. Loved it. 28 Weeks Later was a huge disappointment however.
I second the trauma from 'Child's Play'. I had horrific nightmares for a good amount of time, and would always wake up and proclaim that 'Chucky was under the bed' or 'Chucky bit my finger'. Hysterical now that I look back on ittimminz wrote:The horror movie that scared me more than any other ever has, or will, was 'Child's Play'. To be fair, I was 8 years old, and it was the first horror film I had ever seen.
'High Tension' is probably the best slasher flick ever, and 'The Descent' was awesome too.
I do like J-horror, though usually not what it turns into by the time it reaches our screens through remakes. The original 'Ring', 'The Eye', and a few others were genuinely well though out, scary flicks but we kind of dumbed them down a bit too much.maasman wrote:I thoroughly enjoyed the grudge 1 and 2 along with the ring, those 3 are probably my favorite of the more recent films. Nope, doesn't help. In fact, many of the greatest horror movies of all time netted pg-13 ratings.SultanOfSurreal wrote:pg-13 horror is pretty much the worst fucking thing ever

We were discussing horror, but someone had to detract and state that horror movies have no merit if they aren't Rb.k. barunt wrote:Oh, i thought we were talking about horror films - you must mean slasher films. You gotta dig deeper into the genre then. Obviously mainstream pg-13 sucks, because it's written for your average 10-13 year old movie-goer who cannot yet purchase tickets to an R rated movie.SultanOfSurreal wrote:no i fully agree with you, things like the saw series and "WRONG TURN" and "JEEPERS CREEPERS" and all that other bullshit are disgusting tripe that aims for the lowest common denominator, and further their insane violence is a sad commentary on american societyb.k. barunt wrote:Oh, i thought we were talking about horror films - you must mean slasher films. when i say "pg-13 horror" i mean the recent onslaught of completely unfrightening dreck marketed at teenagers with too much allowance money to spend. not classics from a less harsh time.
however, while those older films you mentioned are masterpieces, they don't particularly frighten today (generally). unless you can tell me with a straight face that The Birds still scares you. i don't think it's aged well.
I have seen 'Cube'. It was pretty original and well done, though I haven't seen it since its release so I'm unsure how well it's fared over time.Timminz wrote:I will agree with you, as far as the sequels are concerned. Have any of you seen 'Cube'?
One of the few sets of sequels I've actually skipped in the horror genreNatewolfman wrote:do so, its worth it (but the 2 sequils are garbage) It was a very interesting idea to be sure, but it could have been better unfortunatelybut still worth the watch!

So, do you enjoy the 'Final Destination' series? I will admit that I do, if only for the "cool kills".lgoasklucyl wrote:Not to admit this openly or anything, but I do see all of the 'Saw' movies, and will continue to do so until they stop. I was wondering when someone was gonna mention Hitchcock. I can only comment on the first three: They are masterpieces of the art of film. You don't only feel scared for the characters, you feel scared, period.b.k. barunt wrote: Psycho

Uber Christians + Rob Zombie =Neoteny wrote:Yeah, Rob's pretty cool. I never saw the Rejects, but I did see House, and it was pretty clear that his targets for that movie were horror buffs. I think a lot of people missed that. I enjoyed it thoroughly. When I first saw it, my girlfriend at the time wasn't sure what the hell to make of it, and the uber-Christian we were watching it with had us shut it off and do something else. I had to come back and watch it on my own later.
