Mafia in decline?

Postby pmchugh on Fri May 15, 2009 7:39 pm

This is continued from a discussion in /'s chuck mafia game and I didn't want to hijack his thread any more. I think this deserves a thread of its own anyway.

I think I am going to start some newbie NV games to try and increase our numbers, and AceArtemis said something along similar lines, although I can't begin any before the end of next week as I have 3 uni exams next week  . I think there are a few things we need to improve to bring in more people. If you guys have any ideas even if you don't play anymore or whatever throw them this way.

As I pointed out in the other thread we are stuggling to make 15 player games these days, when before we could get 30+. Two reasons for this:

1. Not enough new players.
2. The vets have gone.

For point number one I think we have to make the games more interesting and fast paced. As well as making the place more newbie friendly and advertising if we can.

The themes coming up these days are great and all but a lot of them are quite obscure, I say bring back some of the more well known ones even if they have been done before. People will prefer to play in games if they really enjoy the theme. Another thing is the modding, there are not many games these days with big plots, intresting storylines and lots of mod input, the mod has lost the stroy-teller dimension IMO. The last game like this was Batman and I can say it was the funnest game I have played in recent times, william I see you are posting any chance of giving us a game once a few have finished or filled up?

As for fast-paced; inactivity is at an all time high, and I think that no-lynches, slow starts and slow modding are doing damage here. I think some duel games could be fun, haven't seen too many games like this but it could add a new dimension to games. For those of you that don't know what it is, it's when instead of having to reach a majority for a lynch one person challenges another to a duel. Then the remaining players have 24 hours (or longer) to vote for which of the two players they want to be lynched, with no unvoting allowed. In the event of a tie the person who was challenged is lynched. Only problem is, no challenges=no lynches. An alternative is a dual duel game with both conventional lynches and duels alowed.

Now onto the vets, where have they all gone as will asked in the chuck thread? They trickled out one by one and are now as far as I can see are gone barring a few. Many are still on this site for one reason or another so I am guessing the reason they are gone is because the games are unintresting, I would like to try and rope in illy/ga7 to getting the old lot back for a vet game which would hopefully keep a couple coming back for more.

I don't know exactly but something needs to be done before we are left with no games and if that happens I would see no reason other than the footy game to ever come back to this site. I thought nate was doing us some good bringing in people from other parts of the forums and starting the hall of fame idea etc. But now his games have become part of the problem.

Any ideas people?

I may be able to mod two or three small games by the time by current signup is filled :P
I think invitation games could bring back many people, it could possibly even draw in plenty of new players, in fact unless I'm mistaken many of our newer players have been invited to join games as a starting point, of course it was the restrictive signups that drove away several players so it wouldn't be invite only, just to get the word out.
Also I haven't seen an RT in quite awhile, I'd like those to return.

CC mafia is also getting competition from that Pile of Awesome site, which has some of your vets, I believe.

Lately I've been thinking about rules that demand activity above all else and I will probably try them out in an 11ish-player game as soon as my uni-exams end (in 2 weeks).

If someone here is able to make some catchy sigs that link to the mafia forum, that might help drawing people in too.

I've noticed this happening since last year.

This is basically what I've been doing since I started modding - using fun, accessable themes, putting some imagination into the day and night scenes and introducing some player input. (See Trivial Twist)

Yeah you are one of my fav mods left :D But yet still trivial twist required several replacements as I was one of them.

Well I was working on on Marvel Mafia(Good theme?). I made some pretty obscure additions to it, but alas I don't think there will be enough people. There were just to many good superhero's that I had to pick a bunch. The coincidental thing is that I was planning an epic beginning scene that starts the game . Unfortunatley im nowhere near done.

Perhaps we should note on our game titles that newbies or newcomers allowed. Also advertisement in your clan forums could attract players. Should we also advertise in different forums, and hope enough people see it before it gets moved?

Could we not start a mafia clan, or maybe there already is one. Just to coach newbies and to allow vets to do their own thing if they wish.

I checked POA out for a second and couldn't even find the mafia games :? I found it funny having a read at wicked's ironic comments about favourites and poor modding lol. But I would like to actually see the mafia games there though can someone point me in the right direction?

I like the Marvel theme william, I will definately join.

As for another clan I am not sure, I suppose it wouldn't hurt at all but it seems like it restricts peoples access to games.

I'd like to learn how to play, but it seems pretty confusing. I read the Mafia and You thread so I understand the mechanics behind the game but as I read through the threads of some of the games here, it becomes clear that this game is far more confusing than the Mafia and You thread made it out to be. Perhaps you could create a couple simple games for newbies and have a few veterans join to help us figure it out. During the game they could sort of coach the new players on what to look for and what not to do if you want to stay alive.

Being a marvel fanatic, I would love to join this game. That is, if I can learn how to play before then.

Some of us vets are still lurking around..

I'm even in a couple of games!

I don't mean to sound harsh but we liked playing games with exactly the same people each time and the problem was we got very cliquey and then when people left it started not being as much fun, especially in the glory days where you could often whack out 30 pages of debate in one night, no problem - nowadays people can't even make 30 for a single game sometimes. Mafia kinda lost its appeal for us.

It is hard to understand why people leave. I joined my first game a bit ago and now I am in 3 and loving each of them. Mafia is great. Unfourntunently 2 of the 3 games I'm in seem to have died.

Just join a game Mr Squirrel and others listening in, I know it can seem confusing at first but after a few games you'll pick it up quickly. The best way to understand is to play, on Firday i will start a Newbie game for you and others anyway. It's easy to pick up and fun when you do.

Yeah when I joined you were very cliquey, and well lets just say Im not sad about every person that has left. But too many went and no one came in, in all honesty I don't want the old days back, I want things to move forward. For instance when you joined a game back then you almost had to have 6 months training before being allowed in, maybe it kept the games active then but it meant we lost out on players for now.

The game is very fun but it seems we don't broadcast that well, and haven't done for a long time.

There's only one happening right now. It's in the Kegerator. There is no mafia "forum"

And PoA is mainly a forum.

Flicking through the last 2 pages of the POA mafia game it doesn't look like much of a good transfer. It's just as inactive as here but with only one game, plus the game isn't pleasing the players too much either. The old days are gone even when you have a fair amount of old players. Anyway enough of POA, unless we use it to advertise games here

I was thinking of the other way around.

I'm thinking of setting up the game there, but also have a signups thread here and telling people the actual game will be on PoA and have the people move and play there.

As a vet, I think I answer why many vets have left and no longer play mafia.

  • Real life. This one is a given
  • Being banned from the site (take myself as an example)
  • The past moderation by the administration of this site. It made many, many people leave. However, with some people gone and less 'I-am-a-mod-so-I-am-better' attitude to modding from some certain moderators, I think it will cause more people to come back to mafia, and the forums in general.

I have some vets of mafia on MSN, so I'll try and convince them to come back to mafia - for a time.

Also, Mafia on CC has been in decline for some time. I, and many others, tried to revive it (note the slogan in some vets sigs, such as Ga7, as well as the advertisement which, stupidly, got put in here by some moderators decision), and that did bring in more people. We need to do that again. More newbie games, more advertisement. It helps.

Just my 5 cents (cause we don't have 2 cent coins in Australia)
