The meaning of "gg"

Post by Queen_Herpes »

When someone says "gg" and they are losing the game, does it necessarily mean that the opponent is concedeing? I happen to believe that it means the player is concedeing. Just curious about what other people htink and whether or not there is an official stance on "concedeing the game.

I am frustrated by players who "concede" then deploy sets and attack. This seems like a "cheap tactic." Am I right?

concede? gg is just 'Good game', right? Even acceptable to use if you win. But usually used when you're convinced that someone will win.

A "gg" in the chat does not mean the person is conceding (or admitting to/promising anything else either) so I suggest you don't treat it like it is.

since you can't surrender, it is hardly some sort of guarantee of victory when one offers up "gg" within chat... in team games, teams will often state "gg", to throw the other team off, before mounting a huge comeback... so, be cautious of anyone that gives you a GG before it is truly over, they may be setting you up for something huge...-0

So you are saying then that there is some meaning to "gg" that is implied and used as a trick even, right?

Exactly. I have used "gg" when I clearly am going to win. I also use it when it is clear that someone is going to win or someone is going to beat me. I'm hoping to hear from more people on this.

I never concede. I often say gg. I hate when people say gg to me early & watch them like a hawk. Can only think of 1 game where I said gg and won it. Opponent was on at me to concede 5 turns later. Can think of more where I wish I'd said it & come back to find I was a corpse. wp is interesting - means genuinely gg. Has a lot of variants, eg ok you got good dice but I saw you played them well, I learned a neat new tactic from you, or you're good -I'm gonna stalk you

I use gg when me or my team is clearly going to win or lose. I think saying gg and then attacking (other than making it easier for the other team to win by killing neutrals or giving away a difficult to find position) is an unsportsmanlike move. For instance, I play a lot of AoR. If I kill their big stack I say gg...even before I know where their other territory is. However, if someone does the same to me (kills my big stack) I say gg and then announce my position (if foggy) just to save everyone the time. I consider lying about your position after a gg to be a breach of etiquette and rate accordingly. However, as a general rule, I don't think lying about your position is against the rules in any way. Also, I am very cautious of a gg from a player I have never played...this game is all about luck...some skill, but mainly luck, so even if someone thinks they are beat they may hit a lucky set or get some gr8 attacker cubes and end up winning. Just my two cents...interesting topic.

I only do this when I know I cannot win and i want to get the game over with (1v1 only)

There is no point in dragging out a game if there is no way to win. I just deploy and auto-attack until it is over. (again 1v1 only or any game where I am the last player on my team)

Exactly. I say "gg" when the end of any game is in sight, whether I'm winning or losing. There's no special significance or strategy involved when saying it, as far as I know. I never concede, no matter how bad the situation looks. The game is never over 'til it's over.

well gg means good game .... but i got a good quote the other day in a game .... someone told me "well i will say good game and not 'gg' just so it doesnt seem like the traditional - f*ck you its over 'gg' ".... so there can be other thoughts inside the meaning of gg than just good game....

I personally have a problem saying gg in certain situations - like if it hasnt been a good game ... one sided dice ... or someone deadbeats ... its definitely not a good game... i consider a good game when we battle back and forth and something happens eventually to push a win one way or the other ... so maybe it would be best to not say gg ... and ignore people when they say it to you

then maybe you wouldnt have to believe they are conceding ... its just a standard message like "ffs" or "bs" or "fu" ... people always see it repeatedly and then start using it ... i truly disbelieve that anyone would use it as a ploy to make you think they have conceded (not saying it hasnt happened, there are some jacked up folks on conquer club) and if it works  ... maybe they employed a good (non-strategy) strategy :-s

and that could fall into cheap tactics------ but you are still the one at fault for thinking it was conceding ... if the person had said "alright i give up" thats a different story .... maybe the dice just turned for him/her and they came back ...

god knows it would never happen to me with the 85% loss on dice rolls this past week .... yes 85% loss .... thanks to conquer club's nonrandom dice file ... i always have bad dice

I take it to mean something very simple.

gg = good game.

What I'm really saying is "you've probably got me beat on this one. I'll keep trying in case you mess up, miss a turn, or the dice decide to b^tchslap you, but if all goes accordingly this game is yours."
Always do the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason, even if no one is looking.
