The world of Baghdad in the middle of the 8th century is truly an amazing place. In this context the first insane asylums were developed. Unlike their Christian brethren to the north and west, Muslims did not believe those who were ill merely controlled by demons, rather they believed they could be treated and hopefully, eventually, brought back from their conditions.

Yet not all among you seek to heed such a higher calling. There are some who would wish to maim and provoke suffering as they do not see Allah’s calling as worthy, or perhaps deem it misunderstood.
