Well, I'd also say that writing out slurs like that lessens the oomph. Kinda like when you write the word-that-must-not-be-named on POA (I didn't, I seem to remember it being Norse or somebody who discovered it) I don't think "gay" has become a decent part of the lexicon, and I'm not sure it ever will.
