Airfix Kit of Lancaster Bomber

Currently on television here in England there is a guy called James May.
He has made a series of 6 programmes reminiscing on his old childhood toys.
He's so far done programmes on Plasticine , Scalextric, Meccano & . Airfix

My birthday was coming up and my Mum asked me what I wanted. "I can't think of anything mum", I told her.
Time was running out, so I said "After James May and his silly programme, get me an Airfix kit!"
"What sort of kit do you want?" she asked.
"Surprise me" I said.

I used to make these when I was a kid and was expecting a silly little present, a Spitfire or something, just something to remind me of my youth.
I went round Mum and Dads this Sunday for a Roast Dinner and my sister started pestering me for what i wanted for Christmas.
"Let me have a look at what Mum & Dad have got me for my birthday. I might need some glue."

So I opened this Airfix kit, and I discovered that they had bought me this:

When built, this thing is going to be 12" [300mm] long and 18"[450mm] wide. I've got nowhere to put it once made.
When I was a kid, I used to have these models hanging from my bedroom ceiling, but it's not something I want hanging from my bedroom ceiling when I'm 41.

What shall I do?

My brother used to do Airfix when I was younger, I think there pretty cool. Can't you put it on your desk or something after its finished?

Obviously at your age you don't want it in your bedroom. You live on your own and no one can stop you from hanging in the bathroom where it belongs.

I made a older version of that one when I was a kid! Who cares what you do with it when it's done, the joy is in the making! You'll need a set of needle files too...

Pedro I watched the scalextrics one with my lad. I can't beleive the locals around Brooklands won the nerds who race them all the time. unbeleivable how the track went throught the office block and over the pond and the wire fences(20ft high).


my oldest brother use to have them up, hanging from his ceiling in a dog-fight. I think he had about 8. I was more into my toy cars.

I also had military airplanes hanging from my ceiling of my bedroom, and some were even WWII era fighters, I had one Spitfire for sure.

Of course, that was all mixed in with Darth Vader's Tie Fighter, an F-4 Phantom, and an F-16 among others, with Doug Masters carefully written under the cockpit, showing the pilot's name.

class, pimpdave an iron eagle reference, you dont hear many of them these days. i can remember having piles of 2 pence coins under rotor blades on helicopters holding them up until the glue dried. those were the days

This makes me want to go out and buy some models. I'm sure my wife would be extremely happy to see me sitting at the kitchen table with glue and a bunch of parts tonight.

started glueing it together (the bombs, wheels and smaller components tonight). Current Pedro camera not good enough for close ups. need to get a better camera. this thing is going to require close ups.

Ah yes, fond memories of sitting at the dining table with my elder brother glueing and painting into the wee hours. He favoured the ships (Tirpitz, Graf Spee, etc) and I mostly did the planes (German fighters and British bombers) which hung for a few years from my bedroom ceiling, with red & grey painted cotton wool billowing out of a few stricken bombers. The Germans met their match in the end though, for a few years later my bro got an air rifle for his birthday so I took the Fockes out to the garden and shot them (after the local bird population susssed out that our garden was no longer a safe place to hang out).

And did anyone make the Saturn V rocket? Pretty boring as far as assembly was concerned, but the little command module at the top was pretty nifty. That did a few miles around our house I can tell you.

Have tried making kits with my lad but he doesn't seem interested, plus the paints these days are crap. What happened to the good old Humbrol enamel tins? Lead-based probably, which may go some way to explaining my miscreant youth after ingesting so much of the stuff.

Love James May's programmes. I think he would have been my best mate at school - all his likes & dislikes are identical to mine. I bought my kids Scalextric when they were like 6 & 4 or something daft (it really was a prezzie for myself) and last Christmas I managed to get hold of Subbuteo from the UK (but the figures are now cardboard instead of the decent plastic that one could paint). Cheap buggers.

But thanks for the trip down Memory Lane. Somewhere in a cupboard I've got a Tamiya Kawasaki GPz750 which I can make (now there's a decent model kit) and my kids have fully-automatic BB machine guns so I guess we'll all enjoy this one

Oh boy...been there. I bought myself one of the gas-powered BB pistols a few years back, and sitting in the living room with a mate thought I'd try out my new purchase. Aimed at the coffee percolator in the kitchen - which was quite a distance - and the f'in thing smashed to pieces (I thought it was just going to go 'ping!'). Could I find or buy a replacement coffee pot? Could I bollocks.

I used to have an early Mig. but jets didn't cut the mustard. It had to have a propeller.

All 4 propellers glued together, all rotate freely when blown upon.
