I disagree... having no problem with acupuncture, chiropractors, nutritionists
or other sources of natural healing. Maybe you have personal experience with
Libertarianism and abstinence only education, but avoided the rest and accept
the hearsay testimony of naysayers about potential health alternatives.

Dude, I don't fucking need hearsay testimony. In fact, that would be about the dumbest thing to use when making up your mind about alternative treatments. The only reason people do this kind of shit is because they heard great things about it from their friend's mother's cousin who totally got cured from Crohn's by having their spine manipulated.

Acupuncture is based on complete bullshit magic. Studies have shown this. One german study compared meridan-magic acupuncture to sham acupuncture where they just made up random patterns of needles and it turns out they both work exactly as good. They even compared it to using a retractable needle which didn't actually go into the skin (they patient merely thought they entered) and big suprise that worked fine too. The common opinion now is that it's mostly a placebo-effect coupled with a slight benefit of having endorphins released trough nerve-stimulation.

Endresult: Bollocks.

Chiropratic is based on holistic principles. Holistic stands for untestable metaphysical bullshit.
Wait... let's check what wiki says:
Straight chiropractors believe that vertebral subluxation leads to interference with an "Innate Intelligence" exerted via the human nervous system and is a primary underlying risk factor for many diseases. Straights view the medical diagnosis of patient complaints (which they consider to be the "secondary effects" of subluxations) to be unnecessary for chiropractic treatment.

It's based on magic....

Nutrionists are just dumb. It's not a protected term, so anyone can call themselves one. Anyone who has actually studied nutrition and diet in professional ways is a dietician. If that's not the term they're using, they're frauds out to make a quick buck by telling you you're allergic to wheat or something.

Libertarianism is just a dumb political philosophy. It's dumbness needs no further explanation here.

Homeopathy can't work, if by some chance it did then it would completely invalidate everything and I'd become a wizard.

The truth is, its bullshit.

I don´t know about acupuncture but lying on a bed of nails can be very relaxing.. though I doubt it can cure any actual disease (which some seem to claim).

Hmmm ... Apparentley, some here probably haven't tried any of the above. There are bad homeopaths, bad doctors, bad chiropractors etc. There are also goods ones as well. A lot of the homeopaths have very week formulas where they have - in a 2 oz bottle - 1% of 1% of alcohol with whatever herb they are using mixed in water. The resulting mixture is 99% water. So you're right in that they are bogus. When if you mix 100% alcohol, with 100% of whatever herb then you have a 100% formula thereby working better. Heck the drug companies when they do their blind studies they find those that are only taking those sugar pills basically get the same results as those who are taking the drug. Chiropractors are now considered as doctors now-a-days. Just think, centuries they used to drill holes in your head to relaese the pressure or whatever they were trying to do. What do you think people thought of doctors performing operations thousands of years ago, they were thought of as "snake salesmen", so what's the difference?

I have personally seen the effects of people getting well using these sort of things, and these people who said that they don't work.

I'll vouch for snake-oil. I've made a massive profit.

A lot of homeopaths actually have far weaker formulas.

30C is advocated as the usual strenght for most cures. That's a 10^60 dilution.

Wiki describes that as "Dilution advocated by Hahnemann for most purposes: on average, this would require giving two billion doses per second to six billion people for 4 billion years to deliver a single molecule of the original material to any patient."

If your drug does not work better than a placebo, it's useless.

Not really.

Anecdotal evidence should not be used to determine whether something is any good or not.

No, not useless. Useful, in fact. Certainly, temporarily. Placebos are not useless, after all.

Yeah sure but when claim they're magical super-effective drugs and sell them for tons of money it's kinda fucked up.

You have to claim they're magic or else the placebo won't work. And the more people pay, the more they expect, so... better placebo. At least that's how it should work... :P

Well that's the point of placebos. Peeps must be convinced they're genuine. However, any drug must perform better than a placebo. Like, a part of every drug's work is placebo, even something we know that works like aspirine. (If you take an aspirine most people feel better after just 10 or 15 minutes, even though it takes half an hour to even be absorbed.)

That is if they are even absorbed. Some medications pass right through the body and not even get touched. HEnce the placebo effect.
