a couple of days of snow has seen our roads become treacherous and the railways virtually cancelled. hence nobody or the vast majority stay at home. today i needed to speak to a solicitor and due to the 'inclement weather' the bitch is reluctant to get off her lazy arse.

the shops have had no fresh meat, fruit/veg or bread. the authorities where i live have not even attempted to clear the major roads or the footpaths of the city. it's bloody ridiculous!

thank god hitler never got his hands on a giant snow making machine. for if he had, the nazi's would've marched through britain unhindered.

Same thing happens in the southern states in the U.S.I heard Texas was considering closing schools because it got down to 20 or something... though I suppose if they aren't equipped with adequate heating, it kind of makes sense.

when i was younger and lived in the north heavy snow never stopped daily life. the snow has been here for four days now and the authorities here in portsmouth have done nothing.

i heard it's costing the gov't £600million per day, but what about the loss of tax? this morning on the beeb there was an interview with a farmer that had to waste 15.,000 litres of milk because the lorry couldn't get through to pick it up. that's just one instance.

with a little foresight this situtaion could've been easily handled.isn't this why we pay our taxes?

My brother lives in N.C. he told me when they got a few inches of snow a couple of years back that the whole state basically closed. He went out for a drive through town and was the only car on the road and everything was closed, even the Wal-Mart.

in florida it has apparently dropped to 1 degree celcius. still, that has it's dangers. iguana's are falling from trees because they normally go into hibernation at 4 celcius and their bodies are shutting down early due to the 'cold' weather. at least we don't have to worry about iguana's falling and breaking our necks. got to look on the bright side.

Its one of the things you pay your taxes for. So are flood defences. So are repairing roads. The next time your house floods or you crash the car on a badly maintained road, you are going to say 'why wasnt something done sooner'. If they answer 'well, we've got hundreds of thousands of tonnes of grit stored away in brand new storage sheds in case we get freak weather conditions', are you going to say 'oh thats ok then'? If they say they need to put up taxes to cover every eventuality, are you going to say 'yep, you're right'

the roads are an integral part of the infrastructure. without an infrastructure all society falls apart, as we have seen. no food in the shops, people not going to work, hospitals unreachable etc. surely you realise this eventuality is quite different to a flood or a dodgy road. i myself am a roadworker and i know the gov't have let us down terribly.

as for the country not being able to afford this eventuality. well, everything is already there to avoid it. it was just taken too lightly!

I went to the pub last night for my weekly game of poker. there were just 2 bar staff, 20 poker players and no one else. (This is in north london, not some low density population village)

around 9pm 2 people wandered in the pub. The roads are clear, but the pavements are icy.

The pub is normally very busy on a thursday night. Everything about this cold snap is just fucking up the recession even more. The phones ain't ringing at work because a lot of people are taking time off work to babysit their children who should be at school.

I'm not expecting this country to hold thousands of tons of rock salt, but what i do expect is that not only are main roads gritted, but the roads that lead from main roads to schools are gritted, and I don't expect everyone in this country to own snow chains, but surely the bus company could see their way fit to own 12-18 sets per garage, so that the public vehicles could get out there and run some sort of service.

Basically I did this just for fun, however, it turned driving in the snow into a completely mindless act. I have repeatedly saved myself from disaster without time for thinking. I owe this all to the many, giggle inducing, hours spent doing donuts and power slides in parking lots.

Given that it's supposedly costing the government 600 million euro a day plus the cost to business, it seems like a good idea to buy a couple dozen of those, and maybe a few salt spreaders too.

hecter, we have the salt spreaders, just no salt to spread and quite a lo t of the roads have some kind of defence against joy-riders, so it impossible for ploughs to go down quite a lot of streets.

It's not like it will go bad anytime soon, and winter is every year, so maybe they should actually stockpile some for this exact event.

If you google for salt shortage or something you'll find much of the US short of it this year - I read about it a few months ago.

The UK, at least the southern half of it, really isn't used to cold weather for any length of time. I shovel my pavement/sidewalk here in NJ more times each year than I did in my whole life in the UK.

It's so cld in the UK at the moment that I had a phone conversation with my Dad and he didn't need to exaggerate once!
