Good RPG

Post by KidWhisky »

Ok I'm looking for a good RPG to waste my time with. I know that there are a ton of them out there but I have been out of the gaming "loop" for a while now and could use a hand finding a good one. Something in the medievil, swords, arrows, dragons type game. I'm also looking for something quite lengthy with a fairly good story line. Any ideas?

Dragon Age: Origins seems right along those lines, out for 360 and PS3. Medieval type of game, made by Bioware who also came out with the Star War: KOTOR series of RPGs which were awesome. Took me about 80 hours to beat the first time, and there was a ton of shit I didnt even do. Plus there are 6-8 distinct storylines you can playthrough depending on your class and race, which means you can play several times through and get a different experience.

Console? - Dragon Age

Computer - Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II

I would recommend BG and BGII.

Some oldies you've already probably played, but just in case:

Might and Magic VI
Might and Magic VII
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate II
Icewind Dale
Icewind Dale II
Diablo
Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura (not so old)
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (not so old)

I heartily recommend any of these that you may not have played.

xbox360

Swords, dragons etc.
Oblivion (maybe my all time favorite - although dated somewhat now)
Dragon Age: Origins (ok)

Other RPG's on xbox360
Fallout 3 (post-apocalyptic not dragons, but huge)
Mass Effect (Sci-Fi setting - very good, pluss Mass Effect 2 comes out soon)

Oh, I almost forgot the game I'm currently playing (duh)...Wizardry 8. I REALLY like this one, and it's got me set to buy the previous versions I can find.

Did you get mods for it? With mods it becomes great.

Suggestion: Dungeons and Dragons

You know, Dragon Age is out for the PC as well.

Mount and Blade is also on the PC, though it's not really an RPG per say... You basically start off as a nobody in Midevil fake-land, and you build up your respect and stuff and recruit a bunch of dudes to follow you around, maybe join a faction, do some quests for the other characters in the game, escort some caravans, take over castles and raid villages and shit. But, it simply doesn't have a storyline. It's literally non-existent. No boss fights, no scripted encounters, nothing. Everything that happens in the game is completely decided by you. How people feel about you is dependant on whether or not you raid their villages or attack them, or if your faction is at war with theirs and the quests you do for them. If you take up a quest and don't do it, they'll be upset, but other than that, there's no reprimand. And there's a shit load of mods for it too. Like, you can turn it into a civil war era type thing if you want to.

Wow there are some good titles here. I forgot to say that I am looking for a PC game.

I have played Oblivion And quite liked it as well as Mount & Blade. Mount & Blade was good and some of the mods for it are incredible but I found that it started to drag after a while and the fact that you can't really become king is a bit of a bummer. The Might and Magic games were a lot of fun to.

For some reason I have not played Baldur's Gate, I may have to take a look at those as well as Dragon Age and a few of the others you guys mentioned. I'm playing Siege of Avalon right now but it leaves a bit to be desired.

It is a bit of a bummer... But you can become Marshall, which is close. I do agree about it dragging on though... It can be kinda tedious after a while, but then I just take a break and come back in a couple months when I'm bored.

I tried Diablo and Oblivion, but didn't find them to be very fun. Fallout 3 is exceptionally good, but definitely not a Medieval game. Fable is a good Medieval style game (wrapped it twice) which I would recommend, and I think there's even a newer one in the works right now.

I'm still playing Dragon Age right now, and it's a lot of fun, but as a lot of others suggested, it is a rare Bioware game that fails to entertain. This is especially true if you want a plot and character focused RPG with a lot of sidequests.

I wonder how much of that design was on purpose. Maybe Bioware said, "You know what? People that play console games are generally stupid, and thus would like repetitive quests." All of their other games (yes, all), are not repetitive, so this one seems weird that it is.
