Who goes first?

How is it determined who will go first? It seems to be random, but I'm not sure. I apologize, by the way, if this question has been asked and answered a hundred times already. I searched the forum for a while and couldn't find any similar topic.

In standard it is random, in freestyle either player can go first

I'm finding in manual deployment games, the one who places their troops first, oftentimes goes first. And even in freestyle, if you place your troops last, you can't go first, which doesn't seem to make sense as its not like you can see where your enemies put their guys and place against them.
