Hey nietzsche, it's fine by me if you like that kind of music. Keep listening to it. I was just stating my opinion. 8-[

However, there are songs that have achieved a certain greatness, and I feel like that while you might not LIKE a certain "great" song, you can't deny how great it is.

Like, Smells Like Teen Spirit. I personally have a hard-on for that song, but I've heard some people say it's Nirvana's worst song (or like how this one kid said "Bohemian Rhapsody" was Queen's worst song. Jesus Christ I wanted to kill him). Ok, so maybe you personally don't like the song, but there is no denying that Smells Like Teen Spirit was one of the GREATEST songs of the 90s, possibly of the last 50 years. Well, the greatness of it is defined by me, and everyone probably has their own definition of great.

I've heard Yellow before and haven't heard much OF it, so to me, it's not a GREAT song (compared to other all-time GREAT songs [Stairway to Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc.]), but that in no way means that it's not GOOD (individuals like different songs).

Oh, and if you don't think Bohemian Rhapsody is a GREAT song, go f*** yourself! =P
I'm surprised by that remark about Bohemian Rhapsody but I guess everyone has their own musical tastes...I'm not a big fan of Nirvana, I like their music but I don't love it and I don't like Smells like Teen Spirit any more than any of their other music.

I do find it surprising that so many people don't recognize the song though...I don't listen to that song very often but I have heard of it.

Coldplay are pretty well-known over here. Perhaps you're thinking of Muse, or Placebo.
No, I'm not. Because I live over here. I think it was MTG who had never heard it.

Also, who the f*ck hasn't heard of Muse? Placebo is one thing, but if you haven't heard of Muse you should git out of mah countrah!
Believe me, I feel the same way, but, to this day, occasionally I'll mention Muse, and someone will say "Who?", and then I show them, and they say, "Holy fucking hell, this is good! Why the fuck have I never heard of these guys before?!", similar to the way I reacted when some random Spanish dudes introduced me to Muse, in Brugges 2005. They actually laughed when I said I didn't know who Muse were. They thought I was joking, and could not fathom that someone had never heard of Muse. I traded an unmastered copy of my band's first album with them in exchange for their Muse cassette. Then we all got drunk (those Belgians sure know how to make beer), and stoned (we had all just left Amsterdam), while playing cards, and listening to Absolution.

Further to this string, I was looking at wikipedia last night and noticed this....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muse_discography#Albums
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coldplay_d ... phy#Albums

As you can see, Coldplay are more popular overall (sad, I know), but when you look at the spread between UK/AUS charts, and those of US/CAN, you'll see that Coldplay sell between 2 to 4x as many records (relatively) in UK/AUS, than they do in US/CAN, whereas Muse sell more than 10x as many in UK/AUS, as they do in US/CAN. Hell, they've never even gone gold in Canada, and have only received 1xGold in the US with 2 of their 5 studio albums (although, I bet The Resistance will do at least that well, given time).

Definitely positive. I've also noticed that they finally had a charting single in Canada, with "Uprising", from The Resistance reaching # 28 so far.

Also, I will be driving between 11 and 12 hours (each way) to see Muse this Saturday, in another country.

Goes to show awards are not meant to be taken seriously and have a lot to do with marketing.

I bloody hate Coldplay - to my ears they do very little that's musically interesting. They just represent something which I wish didn't exist, a pinnacle of mediocrity that just placates people, doesn't make them think.

But yeah, loads of people like it - so I guess that makes it a classic. But IMO it's musically particularly uninteresting.

I'm lukewarm on Coldplay... they seem like a cheap knockoff of Radiohead (I'm also lukewarm on Radiohead).

I hate Nirvana with a passion. Here... three chords... oh by the way, I can't sing and my lyrics suck... but my song will define a generation of music. Pearl Jam dammit!

I like Muse; don't love them. Definitely more my style than a Coldplay or Radiohead.

Bohemian Rhapsody is not Queen's best song; I'm not sure I would even put it in their top 10. And I'm a huge Queen fan.

For those that care, I've been listening to older Kings of Leon, Raconteurs, Wolfmother, and, as always, Tool. This is good music.

f*ck Kings of Leon.

f*ck them to death.

I doubt you'll find many people dissing Tool. Hell, you, me, and Gabon could probably sustain a Tool thread on our own.

JSYK, I hate Tool.

Granted, the only 3 songs I know by them are from Guitar Hero, but all they do is DRAG the F*** OUT.

Eh, I guess Nirvana is just an acquired taste. Like, if you really want to HATE Nirvana, then listen to http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/artist/Nirvana/57. Personally, I love this song. Where you might see it as "jerking off on a guitar", I see it as brilliance. To me, this song perfectly grasps the whole concept of "grunge", which was the 90s essentially (minus the Britney Spears). I looooove Pearl Jam, even more than Nirvana, but SLTS is GREATER than any Pearl Jam song.

To me, Coldplay and Radiohead are not even remotely close to each other. Radiohead is tied with Queen for my favorite band, and their music style (as is Queen's), is so incredibly unique, that it's essentially their own genre. And, while it is in your right to think it isn't their "best" song, the GREATNESS of Bohemian Rhapsody it is undeniable. Almost EVERYONE knows that song, while it's hard to get people to name the band that performed it.

Tool does do long songs, but (most of the time) they're pretty interesting, and even when they do drag it out (particularly on the GH songs) they're doing it with awesome riffs.

I respect Nirvana. I don't particularly listen to them any more. They had their influence, but I don't know that they are as influential as the superfans claim them to be (cue Juan).

A friend of mine made me listen to an album of theirs years ago. I found them rather forgettable, which is fine. They weren't hurting me. Then they hit it big with the shit they have on the radio now, and I find it difficult to forgive them. I imagine their older stuff is better, because it can't get much worse than their new stuff.

Nope. Like I said before, I'm continually dumbfounded by some of the people I know who have never heard of Muse. Most recently, some of the guys I'm in a band with. I mean, how in the hell does a fucking MUSICIAN, who shares enough in common with me to PLAY IN THE SAME FREAKING BAND, not know who Muse are?! IN 2010, no less. It bottles the mind.

Also, Tool YES!

And even more also, everything Coldplay has ever done is better than Yellow. I actually found myself kind of enjoying their set on SNL a while back.

There seems to be a real hatred of coldplay here. I'm not a massive fan but I believe they have some really good songs and Yellow is one of them for me. I'm not sure about it being an all-time great but it's certainly popular, despite what these people are saying. I think I saw someone write that Muse's Resistance is one of the best albums or something like that. I would completely disagree and say that it is mainstream epic bullshit that is not proper Muse. Perhaps I'm being unfair and I'm sure its catchy and all that. I just don't think it's as good as many other Muse albums.
