Russian Map?

Post by kiracat »

Hi. I'm Kira.

So, I'm pretty new here, but I did a little searching, and I didn't find any topics about a potential map of Russia. I'm quite sad to see that although there are many maps including Russia, there doesn't appear to be a map or any maps in the making that focus centrally on Russia. So I was wondering if anyone had given it any thought, and if not, how many people would be interested in a map of Russia? Personally, I think it'd be a good map [or even series of maps] to work on, since A. it's huge, and B. it has a very diverse and colourful past, so multiple designs could be made, each highlighting Russia at a different period in time.

Well, I was thinking one of modern Russia might be nice, but really, I think, one of Imperial Russia would be good, though even that leaves a lot open to interpretation, since the Imperial time period went through a lot of changes. Maybe one pre-Peter the Great/the founding of Saint Petersburg, just to throw people off. :-P

It was really just an idea I was throwing around. I've never made a map, so if I did it [which I'd be willing to try], I'd be testing new waters.

Well, the thing is that if you did an Imperial Russia map then you would essentially be making the Soviet Union map minus Poland. They're so similar that it would be hard to make a standard map of it. I dunno, there would have to be some sort of gameplay twist for it to work. A modern Russia map could work for a standard gameplay, but someone would have to make it.

Hm. Well, I dunno about one for Imperial Russia. But I suppose I could give mapmaking a try and attempt a modern one.

What about a Ruso-Japanese War themed map? I'm no expert on it, but I know it was a pivitol point in both countries respective histories.

Russo-Japanese would be pretty cool but most of the war took place in... well... China. The land war was pretty static, tench warfare, prefiguring WWI. The Naval battle was huge though as the Japanese totally upset the Russians. I would think the war could make a great map.

I recently finished spending some time living and studying in Russia and I would very much enjoy maps of Russia, one could make a geographical map extremely complex or a Soviet resource production map. An easier map to make which I think lends itself well to Conquer Club would be a map of the Moscow, St. Petersburg, or Nizhnii Novgorod cities. One could even simply overlay their Metro systems over a map of major political areas and have something as interesting and strategically stimulating as the New York City map on the site. Here is a link to a decent map of the Moscow Metro. http://speedymole.com/Tubes/Moscow/MOSCOW-SUBWAY-MAP-METRO.jpg

I'm doing one of the trans-siberian railway (it also features a large part of Russia), but it is currently on hold due to the foundry 2 map limit.

While its not all of Russia, it's an important part of it. I'm working on a Russian Revolution map at the moment: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=116575

I think Modern Russia vs. the present Soviet Union map would not be much change. However, you brought up Imperial Russia and that's actually a good idea. Instead of doing it as just "Russia at its Height," perhaps go with Russian Expansion, having bonuses for the claims of Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, and the like. There were numerous military campaigns for Russia to claim its huge size, starting from its initial expansion out of Kiev. So there's plenty of opportunity for a different map, with interesting bonus regions, without going Conquest or Complex gameplay.

Food for thought. ;)
