If you can get a copy of the World of Warcraft install CDs, you could join a free online server... though I'm not going to post any help for that here, because it's not exactly legal.

Tibia is relatively free.

Also, I've heard many people swear by GuildWars, if you want to go out and buy a boxed copy...you can play online for free indefinitely.
