You may be unaware of all the land-owning blacks pre-1776, and blacks serving and being paid the same wage in the continental army, and taking part in the protest that led to the boston massacre. I wish you would take the time to look at my country again, from an un-pre-biased view, because I can see, IMO, everything you are not aware of when you are getting all chippery.

Heads up- this post makes no sense.

I'm still enjoying the "nothing homo-erotic about pride" quote though.

I don't deny them or accept them, I'm just saying that your post makes no sense, and has nothing to do with what I wrote.

Or do you seriously deny that a standard atom of hydrogen has only a single electron?

the people are wealthy and predominantly white, of course, when you get that rich and that powerful, it does not matter what color skin you have. you dont really think that do you?

*readjust pipe in mouth. Oh hoh hoh! But what a change on the people's perceptions there would be, if the Senate and the House of Representin' had a similar "population" of the masses. Don't you agree?

But I somewhat jest. I'd say, "Yes, it would make a difference." Not everyone in the government is wealthy, but some are powerful.

But then again, you do bring up a good point. If one were that rich, would such things as skin color matter? YEAH, they still do.

Yeah you can always seek to minimize it with the otherguysdidittoo slant, but it's not just about slinging mud and/or dodging such.

I was brought up by parents who gave me the usual patriotic Amurkagreatestcountry shit and as a result i bought a ticket to Viet Nam. It's not harmless propaganda. I think i did a much better job by teaching my son the truth about this country so that he'll "pledge allegiance" to friends and family - not some flag that's been dishonored more times than i can count.

The "Hey you guys did bad shit too" argument would be very good if we didn't actually fully admit it.

We know our countries did shit too, that's why we don't have this blind patriotism for it. We like our countries, but we're not going to act like they're the greatest thing ever.

I'm not minimizing it. I'm saying, yeah, there's shit we did in the past just like every other country. What's the solution? We can't go back in time. So, we can either say, "yeah, we're pretty fucking awesome, but we have plenty of room to improve" or we can say "yeah, we suck, sorry everybody." That's why I'm fine with a fucking History channel show about the history of the fucking United States. It's a history channel show. A show. On television. What's wrong with being proud of some of the stuff the US did (or England or France or fucking China)?

Because being "proud of your country" is stoopit. It leads to jingoistic idiocy. It leads to blindly following wankers like Bush when they get us all skeert of terrorists or somesuch and then lead us into a war with Iraq. It leads to "themeansisjustifiedbytheend" mentality that allows our leaders to play God. It leads to all kinds of bullshit, because it is bullshit.

It's just like the "take pride in your school" bullshit back in high school. Wasn't that a great thing - i remember it leading to a lot of fights at football games and such, but did it ever increase the quality of the schools?

We don't just have a choice between "we're awesome" or "we suck". How about "we need to recognize our past mistakes and try not to repeat them", because they keep on fucking happening. We don't need self congratulatory pats on the back right now to make us feel good. We're in a fucking mess and we better sort it out.

National pride doesn't lead to jingoism unless the person is a fucking moron. For example, I have a lot of national pride. I'm against the war in Iraq and I was from the beginning. You know why? Because I'm not a fucking moron.

In my experience national pride leads to jingoism.

As far as national pride goes, i'm proud of our Constitution. I think it's the greatest document ever forged by the hand of man to govern a country. The systematic rape of such is the main reason i hate this government of ours and the coweyed lackeys who support it.

I thought "Roots" was very well done. Great story, great acting and historically accurate without any exaggerations. "White guilt"? My ancestors never owned slaves to my knowledge so i have no reason to feel "guilty". I am however deeply ashamed of my country for the way Blacks were treated and for imbeciles who whine about how unfair it is for Whites to have to feel guilt.

That's just amusing.
I see no whining, kinda difficult over the internet unless really overdone.
So easy for you to say "I have no reason to feel 'guilty'"
Though by many of your earlier posts throughout these forums, it's clear you do either feel very guilty or sympathize very much with that perspective.
Either way, matters not to me.
And you pulled out the "imbeciles," nice.

Roots was OK, acting was typical 80's, and that's clearly no Shakespeare. Story, a bit gripping, but taken in the context of the sociopolitical messaging the 80s had, and what that messaging has developed into today, well, alone it may be benign, in the scheme of things, another story.

Anyone watch it yet? I caught the end of the Revolution episode and I was not impressed. I guess being a history major I wanted more detail than could reasonably be expected to be included in a shorter TV show. My wife liked it though; she has virtually no history background.

I've seen two episodes, it was pretty good, sort of like a survey course on US history.
Last night was pre civil war, cotton gin, slavery, etc. Was a good account of things.
But again, it's broad with snippets of detail.
