April Gameplay Contest

Post by MrBenn »

This has proved to be an incredibly close-run contest, with final result is hung in the balance...

After much thought and deliberation, I have decided to announce a cartographic coalition, with three parties taking a share of the spoils. The three winners will each receive 3 months worth of premium membership, and an official CC Contest medal. Please join with me in extending warm congratulations to Industrial Helix (Gallipolli), Rih0 (WWII Norway) and 00iCon (Natura) =D>

Honourable mention should also go shakeycat (Culloden), General Brock II (Convoy Battle ONS-5), and Wolffystyle (Bay of Pigs) for their contribution to the competition. All six finalists will be permitted to continue development of their competition maps in the Gameplay Workshop, and may be subject to future graphics contests (should the developers so desire).

I look forward to seeing all these maps develop, and hope they flourish in the foundry!

Hello Foundry goers!

After a week of voting, the poll is now ended.
Obviously the whole Foundry Team would like to thank everyone who have taken part.

It doesn't seem that we have a landslide victory, but rather three favorite maps.
For this reason the
Boys in blue want to run a final 7-days poll to see which, between the three most voted maps, will take the final victory!

The last race between the three finalists of the April Gameplay Competition starts now:

Entry B: The Battle of Gallipolli
Entry D: WWII Norway: Operation Weserübung
    Entry E: Natura
Full details of each submission are contained below:

Entry B: The Battle of Gallipolli

First, keep the gameplay as close as possible to his ideas, which I think were about spot on. He did his research well and I hope to be as faithful to the actual battle as his map was. The second was that the graphics remain as unchanged as possible. This sketch doesn't show it, but I'm going to steer the graphics in an homage to Cairns once the competition ends and if this map wins (which judging by my distinguished competitors it's going to be a tough match!)

Without further ado, here's the map:

Entry A: The Battle of Culloden
shakeycat wrote:[bigimg]http://www.atomation.com/~thazzard/fun/ideas/culloden1.gif[/bigimg]

Battle of Culloden, near Inverness, April 16, 1746. British Government army defeats Scottish Jacobites, led by Bonny Prince Charlie, pretender to the throne.

Does it explain itself?

And with all the arrows, it's a bit of madness. Where arrows touch points, means those two can attack each other. For example, Perth and the 10th Dragoons at the top.

Some would start with neutrals, like Shea (protecting Prince Charlie). Might have to reposition so that an extra foot or horse troop can defend Charlie (who escapes in the end anyway.) Prince Charlie and Cumberland start neutral.

The attack method is explained back at Balmerino (blue X's O's), it should make it harder to sweep a whole army. Does the explanation and quick example make sense? I'm trying to prevent friendly fire incidents, here.

Commanders: Almeida, Fernandez, Che Gueverra, Ameijeiras, CIA, Blagar and Barbara J, San Roman, Hunt and Droller

Objective: Hold both Commanders in Chief (Castro, Kennedy) for one round to win the game.

Paratroopers are one way assaulted by corresponding C-46 planes, auto deploy +1
Each Cuban Commander is a starting region, +2 auto deploy each turn
plus 1 troop for each two regions held on each beach (Red, Blue 1, Blue 2, Green)
Frogmen, +2 for 3
Transport ships begin neutral and are assaulted by corresponding sea fury, auto deploy +1
Each American/Exile Commander is a starting Territory and is auto deploy +2 each round
C-46 Planes can one way assault corresponding paratrooper.
Commanders In Chief are auto deploy +4 each round. Each can one way assault their local commanders and mutually bombard opposite Commander in Chief. Hold both for a round to win the game.

The Foundry is pleased to announce the

April Gameplay Competition

Foundry competitions usually focus on the war of art. This April, the foundry is running a competition which is open to all conquer club members regardless of graphical ability... The focus on this contest is all about gameplay!

Your challenge (should you choose to accept it), is to come up with an idea for a map that is thematically linked to April, and that includes a victory condition* of some sort. Once you have an idea for a map, all you need to do is to plan how the gameplay would work and submit a detailed sketch and a textual description/explanation.

*A victory condition is an objective (group of territories or continents) which you must conquer and hold for one round to win the game.

Competition Rules
  1. The theme of your map should be somehow linked to April - whether that be a historic battle or some other event connected to the month.
  2. Entries should consist of a full, playable gameplay sketch without any fancy graphics. The sketch can be created in any graphics application (even MS Paint), or could be hand-drawn and scanned in. For easy viewing, please ensure that your sketch image is no larger than 1024x768 pixels.
  3. The textual description/explanation of your map should be brief (no more than 250 words), and should give context to the map, as well as explaining any gameplay features. The sketch and summary should explain everything that is needed to understand how the map would play. The purpose of this is to provide some context to the map, and to ensure that everything that should be on the sketch actually is.
  4. The victory condition can be as simple or creative as you like, thanks to the recent XML update!
  5. All other gameplay features should be currently available; you may wish to familiarise yourself with the Foundry Gameplay Guidelines.
  6. Once you have completed your entry, post it in the Foundry Competitions Forum as a new topic with the title "April Competition" and your name. This is so you can get feedback from the community during the competition, and so you can make adjustments if needed, and make the best entry you possibly can. Entries will be taken from the first post of each topic (one entry per contestant please).
  7. The competition will run from today April 5th until April 21st 23:59 GMT, after which the Cartography Assistants will select a shortlist of finalists, and a one-week public voting period will be held to determine the winner, who will receive an official CC Contest Medal.

A draft image will be required, yes. This doesn't need to be brilliant, but it does need to be clear and legible.

How thorough should the sketches be? Do you want territories named, for example?

I presume there is going to be a graphics sequel to this competition. So should we aim to make our map meet all the criteria necessary for a revamp?

Perhaps 'sketch' isn't quite the right word. Think more along the lines of 'fully playable draft' with 'no fancy graphics'.
As for territory names, you'll need some sort of naming convention in order to define your objective/victory condition, and it would be difficult to play a map with unnamed territories/army placeholders...

That's one possibility...

I was possibly thinking something more like some of these... while none of these are fully developed, I'm after a working draft of some description (the graphics don't need to be of a decent standard):

Hmm... seems today is the anniversary of the Lincoln Assassination... anyone gonna run with it?

http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history

I dunno if CC would allow anything along the lines of the assassination of a person, but it might be a ripe event for a unique map. Same for the Kennedy Assassination with all its conspiracies. Perhaps it could be a post-assassination map, featuring officials searching for JWB in the theater and the town?

Just for reference -- JFK assassination map in the Melting Pot: Dealy Plaza

More on point: What about Vimy Ridge? That World War I battle holds a special place in Canadian military history and is commemorated on April 9. Sadly, I don't have the skills yet to plunge in and whip up a draft, at least, not one with the detail this deserves. I'm imagining something like Austerlitz, Waterloo, or the upcoming Battle of Stalingrad.

Map Name: Bay of Pigs
Map Size: 138 Regions
Your aims/design style: Out of attempt to create another conquest-style map and fostered by our April gameplay competition, I have decided to mate Feudal War with D-Day map to create a conquest style invasion map.

Uniqueness: With 8 starting commanders, this map finds itself uniquely large with balanced gameplay. We find that this will be an exciting map for singles and team play, alike.

In addition to the shortlisted finalists, congratulations to the following CC members for taking part:
rockandrull - Louisiana Purchase
The Bison King - Battle To Legalise

Without further ado, let the voting begin!

Man, this is too hard. Why can't we at least vote for our favorite two? Will there be a runoff for the top places? <hopeful innocent stare>

There's nothing that says that the non-winners can't be made outside the competition, you know...

I think there should be a revote with the top 3 choices from this one. 6 is a lot to pick from to declare a winner. Just the amount of votes from the least popular map are enough to make the 2nd most popular #1. I say this with no bias either. I voted for E
