Aren't Greeks actually Italians?

Actually, it's the other way around. Italians are actually Greeks. Romans just copied all the Greek stuff and changed the names.

Plus we kicked their asses in WWII. They had to call their German buddies to help.

Rome, Constantinople, Athens, Babylon, DC/NY/Philly were a few that sprang to mind.

Then I did a Google search and found a UK research group that said London was the most important. LOL righto then!

What about Timbuktu? (seriously)

Wasn't it the center of the educational world for a few thousand years?

For right now, I would say D.C.
Most people agree that the U.S.A. is the most powerful in the world...or would at least say that we "police" the world.
I also think that most of our choices come from those in D.C.

As for History I think it's based on places and people that ended massive wars.
The only war that I believe could have destroyed the earth was the Cold War.

I honestly believe that the major part in ending the Cold War was that of a chess match in Reykjavík, Iceland!!!!

No matter how much of a dick Bobby Fischer was as a person, I think he might have single handedly saved the earth...haha!

Cities are just the places of interaction between people.

I might be biased, I really love chess :)

I don't think so.

If I remember correctly, it only came to rise during the Malian Empire which was made up of Mansa Musa and a bunch of Muslim scholars, so it couldn't have been around for MORE than about 1000 years.

For the modern world, it would have to be New York. Its a center for commerce, politics, culture, etc. It is waning in power, but still there. Much more than D.C. DC is just a "show piece", really.

Before that, I would say Rome or Constantinople, at least as far as the west is concerned.

I don't know enough about Southeast Asia or ancient Africa even to suggest a city, but Egypt existed for millenia. Asia had thriving cultures throughout much of that time. So, I would guess there is a city there that could be named.

Then we have pre-columbian America. For that, we have centers of the Aztec/Maya, plus some others up north here. Some of the Navaho areas certainly would qualify as cities, perhaps some of the various Iroquoi tribe posts. A lot of Americans forget that part of why whites were able to come and take over was that the Native population had experienced devastating plagues, likely the plague brought by Columbus and his crew. Even so, we had some pretty hefty fights on our hands.

India and China, the 2 most prominent countries in Asia, tended to have cycles and periods of being split into several nations. So, you really can't focus on just one city for them. Japan, historically, Kyoto would be the best. But up until they were forced to trade outside in the mid-19th century, Japan's only effects were on Japan.

The fact that you American twats have put forward New York. or Washington DC, just underlines how little you American fuckwits get out of your country or understand the title of thread.

The most important city the world has ever known isn't in your fucking country. It's somewhere else. It's a question of history, not current affairs. Your country has been important for a couple of centuries, other cities have given us far more than NY or washington.

take your heads out of your arses and learn about the world. Not everything revolved around America. Just as nothing revolved around Australia.
You're new world, not old world.

But who gives a shit? 'eh?

just wave that flag like some brain dead cunt and believe that the USA gave the world everything that is what we see today.

If only a quarter of you cunts understood world history, we might have half a chance of entering a sensible debate.

You know what's better than asserting that New York is the wrong answer? Proving it, by giving a better example.

Out of the ones mentioned I'm going with the answer based on it's affects on western history so top 3 for me: Athens, Alexandria, Rome. I'm gonna go with Rome after the coin toss.

It must suck to want to be an AMERICAN so badly it makes you spew like you do.

WASHINGTON D.C. = 2000 years of historical world changing power in just a little more than 200.

I didnt read all of the posts but i would have to say Babylonia or Babylon. It culterally, scientifically and religiosly shaped a far larger portion of the modern world than any other that i can think of. Much of Ancient Egypt was shaped by Mesopotamia and its culture.

Thats true thought to step on my own point, no one now knows what the Hanging Gardens looked like or even for certain that it existed and if it did it may not have been that "wonderful"

Also the 7 wonders of the world was just according to Herodotus and therefore is just an opinion.

But my opinion stands remains :)

It's probably nothing next to 6 flags Safari Adventure..

While I agree that 200 hundren years does not history make, it is also true that New York, from a lot of perspectives has helped shape the world in a way that perhaps (and only perhaps) no other city has. History used to move very, very slowly. However, the changes that used to take millenia are now being wrought in a year. So, in that context, putting New York forward is not necessarily all that crazy.

That said, I do think there are better candidates than New York. Paris, for one, though Rome .. most definitely.

I still think the ancient world would be our true answer, but don't know enough about individual cities to proclaim any one.

Babylon was the centre of Mesopotamia, which is widely accepted as the birthplace of civilization.

Nice hanging gardens apart, that's more important than anywhere else.
